Giants to take the court in the fight against breast cancer

La Plume, PA (2-1-10) - For the third consecutive year the Keystone College athletic department will take to the court to help raise awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer.

The Giants are once again participating in WBCA Pink Zone®, which is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Keystone will use its Monday February 15th women's and men's basketball doubleheader against Baptist Bible College as a platform for this year's campaign.

The action kicks off at 6pm with the women's contest, followed at 8pm with the men's game.

The basketball teams from both institutions will be wearing commemorative pink T-Shirts in place of their normal warm-up attire.  In addition, fans of each institution can purchase the same shirts that their respective teams will be wearing for the event, with all proceeds from the event being donated to the American Cancer Society.

As a result of the 2008 and 2009 Pink Zone events held at Keystone, the athletic department has raised $2521 for the American Cancer Society.

The 2010 edition of the Pink Zone shirts are available for just $10.  For more information regarding the event, or to purchase a shirt, please stop by the Gambal Athletic Center; email us at: athletics@keystone.edu; or call us at 570-945-8233.

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event.
