La Plume, PA (4-1-10) - The Keystone College athletic department has announced that
Abby Cohen (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and Esteban Meletiche have been named the Keystone College female and male athletes of the month for March.
Cohen, a freshman from Bethlehem, PA and graduate of Freedom High School, is a member of the softball team. Primarily a shortstop for the Giants, Cohen leads the squad with a .500 (20-40) batting average in 16 games. Her 20 hits tie her for the team lead. She leads the team with seven doubles and two home runs, while also adding a triple to her season line. She has driven in 13, while scoring 11 times. Her 35 total bases, 11 base-on-balls and .875 slugging percentage are all tops on the squad. Cohen's highest hit output to date was a four hit affair in a victory over Rosemont College. In that game she also drove in a season high four runs, while also scoring a season high three times, a fete she repeated in game two of the doubleheader. She matched her four RBI total against Penn State Berks earlier in the season.
Meletiche, a sophomore from Philadelphia, PA and graduate of Frankford High School, is a member of the baseball team. The slick fielding second baseman is hitting at a clip of .412 (21-51) in 14 games for the Giants. His 21 hits are tops on the team. Meletiche has scored 16 runs, while scoring 10, as he has collected six doubles, a triple and a home run. His 32 total bases, which rank him third on the team, also contributed to his .627 slugging percentage. He also leads the team with an on-base percentage of .500, a tally that includes eight walks. In 54 fielding chances Meletiche has committed just one error for a percentage of .981. He has recorded two or more hits in nine of the 14 games in which he has played, having recorded a season high three hit game in a victory over Marywood University.
The Keystone College Athlete of the Month program honors male and female student-athletes each month from September through April. All monthly recipients are eligible for the Keystone College male and female Athlete of the Year honor which will be awarded at the department's annual year-end athletic banquet.
