La Plume, PA (5-4-10) – The Keystone College athletic department honored its 2010 graduating student-athletes and award winners at its annual year-end banquet.
In addition to recognizing 46 senior student-athletes, the College also presented awards for academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as sportsmanship.
Nicole Macedonio and Kenneth Hardnett were named as the recipients of the Keystonian Award, while Jenna Fancher, Eric Shotto and Spencer Lunger were selected as the recipients of the N. Scott Thurston Award.
The 2009-2010 men's tennis team was honored with the Academic Excellence Award for the highest team grade point average, while head baseball coach
Jamie Shevchik was awarded the Keystone Coaches Sportsmanship Award.
The Keystonian Award is presented annually to the outstanding male and female student-athlete. The award recognizes the Keystone student-athlete's competitive athletic achievements during the course of the year.
Macedonio is a senior from Factoryville, PA and a graduate of Lackawanna Trail High School, was a key component of the resurgence and success of the Keystone field hockey program.
Macedonio helped lead the Giants to an overall mark of 14-3, which included an 8-0 record in conference action, as the team advanced to the semi-finals of the CSAC playoffs.
The September athlete of the month at Keystone and the conference field hockey player of the week for the week of September 13th, Nicole was a First Team All Conference selection this past season.
Nicole's offensive skills placed her at or near the top of several CSAC statistical categories, including ranking her second in game winning goals with four.
She ranked fifth in the conference in goals scored with nine and sixth in assists with five. Those tallies also placed her fourth overall in the conference with 23 points.
One of her many highlights this season included a dramatic game winning goal in overtime as the Giants downed Wells College.
Nicole has also etched her name in the Keystone record books, becoming the top goal scorer in a season with nine and second all time for goals in a career with 12. She is also ranked third all time for assists in a career with seven.
Hardnett is a sophomore from Plant City, Florida and a graduate of Plant City High School.
Hardnett helped the men's basketball team to an overall mark of 18-8 this past season, including 13-5 in the CSAC, while advancing to the conference semi-finals.
A three time athlete of the month at Keystone, Kenneth was a First Team All-CSAC selection this past season. In addition, he was named as the CSAC Player of the Week for the week ending December 6th and was a three time selection to the CSAC Men's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.
Hardnett dominated the conference statistical rankings this past season; ranking first in rebounding at 10.4rpg, first in field goal percentage at 61.8%, first in offensive rebounds with 3.5rpg and first in defensive rebounds with 6.8rpg. He was also fifth in scoring at 15.7ppg and fourth in steals at 2.0spg.
His league leading field goal percentage ranked him 20th nationally and his rebound tally placed him 25th in the nation.
The conference Rookie of the Year in 2008-2009, Kenneth currently stands as the Keystone career leader in field goal percentage.
This past season he led the Giants in rebounding in 21 of 26 games and in scoring in 12 of 26 games. He recorded 13 double/doubles and netted over 20 points on seven different occasions. He netted a career high 27 points in January, and pulled in a career high 17 rebounds on two different occasions.
The N. Scott Thurston Award is given annually to one male and one female student-athlete who are in their junior or senior year and have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The primary focus of the Thurston is placed on performance in the classroom, as well as demonstrated leadership and character while balancing the rigors of athletic and academic commitments. Due to the impressive resumes of this year's male candidates, two recipients were chosen.
Fancher, a junior from Lenox, PA and graduate of Mountain View High School, is a member of women's cross country and track and field teams. Fancher compiled a term GPA of 3.94 and a cumulative GPA of 3.85 as a Biology major. This past season she was a second team All-CSAC selection in cross country and a Sportsmanship Award winner in track and field. She set a new PR while competing at the NCAA Regionals in cross country, while also claiming a first place finish in the 5000m at the Muhlenberg Invitational.
Shotto, a senior from Olyphant, PA and graduate of Mid Valley High School, is a member of the men's cross country and track and field teams. Shotto compiled a term GPA of 3.52 and a cumulative GPA of a 3.45 as a Business major. This past season he was a First Team All-CSAC selection, with a pair of seventh place finishes at the CSAC Championships and the Immaculata Invitational and an eight place finish at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. On the track side of things he took second in the Mile at the Ursinus Indoor Classis, while setting a new school record in the 5000m. He is also the men's cross country sportsmanship award recipient.
Lunger, a senior from Lake Winola, Pennsylvania and graduate of Tunkhannock High School, is a member of the men's basketball team and the 2010 CSAC Champions – men's golf team. Lunger compiled a term GPA of 3.66 and a cumulative GPA of 3.25 as a Sport & Recreation Management major. This past season he became the all time leader in made three-pointers at Keystone with 208, while also becoming the fourth all-time scorer in Giants history with 1121 points. In addition to picking up the men's basketball sportsmanship award, he helped lead the golf team to the 2010 conference title, while also earning a 2nd team nod on the All-CSAC golf team.
The men's tennis team was awarded the Academic Excellence Award for attaining the highest grade point average of any varsity athletic program at the College. The tennis team's accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom have demonstrated their commitment to the student-athlete philosophy. For the year the program attained a 3.42 GPA.
Jamie Shevchik picked up the Keystone Coaches Sportsmanship Award to round out the evening's awards program. The Sportsmanship Award is given to the coach who best demonstrates integrity, commitment, sportsmanship, and dedication to his or her program. Coach Shevchik led his baseball team to an overall record of 24-7 to this point in the season and the regular season title in the CSAC.
Five student-athletes have attained a perfect 4.0 grade point average during this past fall's semester: Kimberly Berger, Women's Tennis; Keith Garubba, Men's Tennis; Mark Musumeci, Men's Basketball; Katie Scheuch, Volleyball; Leah Simko, Volleyball.
The Giants Sportsmanship Award is given to one member of each program that best exemplifies team work, spirit, dedication and a positive attitude.
