Weekly athletic wrap-up for week ending 9/5

La Plume, PA (9-7-10) - The Keystone College athletic teams kicked off the 2010-2011 campaign last Wednesday as another academic year got underway.

With the exception of the golf team, all other fall sports were in action, with women's soccer, men's soccer, field hockey and women's tennis all earning victories.

Women's Soccer - After suffering through the 2009 season without picking up a victory or even a goal, Keystone women's soccer started this season off on the right foot, so to speak.  In their season opener at College of St. Elizabeth, the Giants' rode the foot of Charlice Brink, as Brink netted all four of the team's goals in a 4-3 season opening win.  This Week: Saturday -  D'Youville, 1pm, Home.

Men's Soccer - Opened their season at the Drew University Fall Fest, earning a split with a two game schedule.  Scott Bensinger found the back of the next twice in a 2-1 opening game victory over College of Staten Island.  The Giants fell short in their second game of the weekend, 5-0 to Drew.  This Week: Wednesday - Mount St. Mary College, 3:30pm, Home; Saturday -  D'Youville, 3pm, Home.

Field Hockey - After being shut-out 4-0 at King's College in their opener, the Giants bounced back for a 2-1 win against Vassar College.  Katie Darling broke a 1-1 tie with eight minutes to play to give the Giants the win.  LeeAnna Bennett recorded Keystone's first goal of the game.  This Week: Saturday - Wells College, 12pm, Away.

Women's Tennis - Julia Sherry picked up a singles and doubles victory as the Giants took their season and conference opener against College of Notre Dame, 5-4.  This Week: Tuesday - Neumann, 4:30pm, Away; Friday - Gwynedd-Mercy, 4pm, Home; Saturday - Cabrini, 1pm, Home.

Men's & Women's Cross Country - The cross country teams kick started their season at the Gwynedd-Mercy Invitational, although the event was a non-scoring event, the teams had the chance to run on the same course that the conference championships will be held.  Jeff Poindexter was the top Keystone male, finishing fourth with a time of 27:30 on the 8K layout, while Kendra Kulesa took 15th with a time of 21:12 on the 6K women's course.  This Week: Saturday - Keystone College Invitational, 9:30am, Home.

Volleyball - Opened their season with a pair of non-conference losses.  After falling 3-0 at home to Alvernia University, the Giants dropped a five-set heart breaker to Cazenovia College.  This Week: Tuesday - Misericordia, 7pm, Home; Friday and Saturday at Kean University Tournament.
