Giants fall short, 74-66

Gwynedd Valley, PA (1-29-09) - The Keystone College men's basketball team gave Gwynedd-Mercy a battle, but in the end the Griffins were able to pull out a 74-66 win to remain perfect in conference action.

With the win the Griffins moved to 14-2 overall, while also improving to 7-0 in the CSAC.  Keystone, which saw their five game win streak snapped, fell to 12-5 and 6-3.

Tim McCauley netted a game high 23 points to pace the Griffins.  McCauley shot 7-8 from the floor and 5-6 from beyond the arch to go along with six rebounds and six assists.

Matt Johnson added 15 and Dave Smith 10 for the Griffins.  Smith also pulled 11 boards.

Tercel Taylor (Jackson, MI/Jackson) paced the Giants with 18 points.  Kenneth Hardnett (Plant City, FL/Plant City) added 15 and Spencer Lunger (Lake Winola, PA/Tunkhannock) 14 to round out Keystone's double digit performers.  Hardnett notched the double-double by adding 11 rebounds.

The Griffins shot 52% (27-52) from the field and 50% (11-22) from three-point range for the game.  Their 11 three's proved to be a key factor in their victory as the Giants struggled mightily from beyond the arc, hitting on only six of 30 attempts.

After taking a 2-0 to start the game, the Giants saw the Griffins take control as they built an 11-point lead with 6:32 to play.  Gwynedd-Mercy extended the margin to 33-21 with 2:56 as the Griffins seemed to be firmly in control.

However, the Giants had different thoughts as they closed the first half on a 13-0 run thanks in part to eight points from Lunger and five from Hardnett to take a 34-33 lead into the half.

Gwynedd-Mercy wrestled control back once again in the second half building a lead as large as 12 points.  Keystone would cut the deficit to single digits, eventually making it a two point game at 68-66 with thirty-seconds left when Taylor scored on a layup.

However, the Giants would get no closer.  The Griffins, who hit two free throws to extend the lead to four, then would add four more from the charity stripe to finish the game 6-6 in the final seconds, as Keystone mis-fired on three three-point attempts.

Keystone will return to action on Monday February 2 at 8pm when they play host to Neumann College.
