Field hockey closes regular season with win; will ride 11 game win streak into playoffs

Scranton, PA (10-29-09) - Keystone College extended its season-long winning streak to 11 with a 3-1 victory over The University of Scranton in non-conference field hockey action Thursday evening.
The Giants rode the strength of a 10-save performance from junior goalie Melinda Moore (Norwich, NY/Norwich) and received goals from sophomore forward Brackney Brotzma , freshman forward Kelsey Drozda (Wilkes-Barre, PA/G.A.R. Memorial) and junior midfielder Katie Butzer (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) to
Keystone struck first early in the first half, when Brotzman knocked in a shot from six yards out off of a scramble in front of the Royal cage for her seventh goal of the season.  On the ensuing possession, Scranton nearly tied it up, as a shot by Gretchen Kempfgot past Moore and was knocked away by Keystone sophomore midfielder Samantha Morgan (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) who was credited with a defensive save on the play.
After trailing 1-0 at intermission, the Royals picked up their intensity on the offensive end, but Moore came up with a number of saves to keep Scranton at bay.  She finished with seven saves in the final 35 minutes of play.
Keystone extended its lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Drozda—her fifth of the season—before Tirney's goal made it a one-goal game with less than three minutes remaining.

Kaitlyn Tirneytallied the Royals' lone goal in the 67th minute of the second half on a penalty corner served up by Liz Mauer.  Tirney drilled a shot from 18 yards out that found the right corner of the cage for her third goal of the year.
In the final minute, Giant senior midfielder Whitney Hubshman (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) forwarded a ball from the top of the scoring arc that Butzer tapped in for her fifth goal of the season to set the final score.
The Giants, who enter the CSAC playoffs as the top seed, will play host to the lowest remaining seed on Wednesday November 4 at 2pm. The match will be played at Riverfront Sports in Scranton.
