Clinton, NY (11-20-09) – Ursinus College overcame an 11-point second half deficit, while netting the game winner with just five seconds left to play to down Keystone 85-83 in the opening round of the Hamilton College Tournament.
The Giants, who fall to 0-2 on the year, will play in the consolation game at 2pm on Saturday.
Keystone had built and eight-point halftime lead and extended the lead to 11 with just over twelve minutes to play before Ursinus put together a 40-27 run to draw back into the game and eventually overtake the Giants.
A Tercel Taylor (Jackson, MI/Jackson) layup with twenty-three seconds to go put Keystone up by one at 83-82, however, a missed Keystone free throw coupled with a Ursinus layup and free throw with five seconds left sealed the Giants fate.
Taylor paced the Giants with a game high 26 points, while Ryne Luce (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) added 17 and Kenneth Hardnett (Plant City, FL/Plant City) 16. Hardnett completed the double-double with an 11 rebound effort. Hardnett also chipped in with four steals and four assists for a solid outing.
Despite out-shooting Ursinus from the field (55.9% to 44.3%) and from three point range (44.4& to 38.9%), the Giants struggled for the second straight game from the free throw line, hitting on only nine of 20 attempts, while Ursinus converted on 32 of 34 attempts.
