Catholic trips up Giants in home opener

La Plume, PA (11-29-09) - Brianna Peterson netted 22 points and Jenny McGann added 19 as Catholic University slipped by Keystone College 71-59 in women's basketball action.

With the win the Cardinals move to 4-2, while Keystone falls to 0-3.

The Giants kept it close despite going to the free throw line just nine times, while Catholic made 30 trips to the charity stripe.  However, the Cardinals were only able to convert on 16 attempts.

The Giants held an early lead at 6-2 thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Ellen Fallon (Scranton, PA/Scranton) and Jazmine Harris (Fairfax, VA/James W. Robinson), but Catholic would regain the advantage, building a 12-point edge midway through the first half before settling on a seven point lead at the break.

The Cardinals would build a 17-point lead with ten minutes to play, but the Giants kept fighting back, drawing within eight with over two minutes to play.  Catholic would secure the win making six free throws in the closing minute.

Ellen Fallon (Scranton, PA/Scranton) paced four Keystone players in double figures with a 14-point afternoon.  Fallon hit on four threes, while also grabbing seven rebounds and dishing our five assists.

Theresa Yazurlo (White Plains, NY/Bishop Hannan) added 13, while Melinda Moore (Norwich, NY/Norwich) chipped in with 11.  Yasmeen Bates (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain West) came up big on the glass for the Giants with an 18 rebound outing, while also netting 10 points.  Sarah Barreto (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) dished out a game high six assists.

The Giants will return to action on Thursday at 6pm as they open up their conference slate with a home game against Philadelphia Biblical University in the first game of a doubleheader.
