Surfside Beach, SC (3-10-09) - The Keystone College softball team has compiled a mark of 1-3 during their first two days of competition while competing in South Carolina.
The Giants recorded a 5-4 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday for their first win of the season.
In the team's opener on Monday, a 6-5 loss to LaRouche College, the Giants were led by Sabrina Johnson and Leah Simko (South Gibson, PA/Mountain View), with each collecting two hits. Johnson picked up a triple and an RBI, while Megan Thomas (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) also collected an RBI.
Leah Simko (South Gibson, PA/Mountain View) picked up Keystone's only hit in game two, as the Giants lost to Juniata College, 12-0.
On Tuesday Keystone notched their first win of the year with a come from behind 5-4 victory over Wentworth. Kelly Iovieno (New York, NY/Professional Performing Arts) was the hitting star for the Giants picking up three hits, including a double, while also knocking in three. Johnson was a force once again at the plate, picking up another triple as part of a two hit performance. Simko was also a two time hitter, while Heather Trudgeton, Lori-Ann Marino (Hawley, PA/Wallenpaupack) and Thomas each picked up hits.
Keystone would take a 3-0 lead in the game after pushing across runs in the second and third innings. A four run fifth put Wentworth on top for the first time at 4-2, before the Giants cut the margin to 4-3 in the sixth. Iovieno's double plated Thomas in the top half of the seventh to push across the winning run. Meagan Cunningham (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) earned the victory to move to 1-2 on the season.
In the team's fourth game of the trip, a 12-0 loss to the University of Charleston, Thomas picked up two hits, while Johnson and Trudegton each added singles.
The Giants have four games remaining on their trip, with two on Wednesday and two more on Thursday.
