Fallon's 27 points not enough as Griffins down Giants

La Plume, PA (1-25-10) – Gwynedd-Mercy College used a 19-4 run to overtake Keystone in the closing minutes and close out the game, as the Griffins downed the Giants 70-56 in CSAC women's basketball action.

With the victory Gwynedd-Mercy moves to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference, while Keystone falls to 4-12 and 2-7.

With Keystone holding a 52-51 lead following an Ellen Fallon (Scranton, PA/Scranton) layup with 4:48 to go, the Griffins took complete control of the game allowing the Giants just two points over the next four plus minutes. A pair of Barreto free throws in the final minute accounted for the other points.

Fallon hit for a game high 27 points to pace the Giants. The junior guard also pulled in five rebounds to go with four assists and three steals.

Melinda Moore (Norwich, NY/Norwich) was the only other player in double figures for Keystone with 10 points. Moore pulled in seven rebounds, while dishing out a game high six assists. Yasmeen Bates (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain West) cleaned the glass for a game high 13 rebounds. Sarah Barreto (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) added nine points.

Kristy McGrath hit for 21 points to lead four Griffins in double figures. Brittany Neil (17 point and 12 rebounds) and Jackie Dooley (13 points and 12 rebounds) recorded double-doubles for Gwynedd-Mercy.

It was the Giants fast out of the gate, grabbing a 7-0 lead, with Fallon hitting a three and layup to get scoring going. After the Griffins tied things at 10, a Fallon trifecta moved the Giants back in front.

The Griffins would build a 10-point lead before settling on a six point halftime lead. Gwynedd would build their advantage back to 10 at 42-32 with 13:36 to play. The Giants clawed back in when Fallon hit a jumper and two free throws, while Barreto drained a three and added a layup, as the Giants took a 43-43 lead.

The teams would exchange leads three times over the next five minutes, before a Fallon layup put the Giants back on top at 52-51 with 4:48 to play. However, the Griffins took back control using their late run to pull away.

Keystone will return to action on Thursday at 6pm when they travel to Marywood University.
