Giants Open CSAC Play With Sweep of Cairn

Pembleton tosses two-hitter in opener as Keystone holds Highlanders scoreless in doubleheader

Langhorne, PA – Keystone College's baseball team did not allow a run and Giants' pitchers yielded just six hits as Keystone opened Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Cairn University.  Mike Pembleton (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) tossed a complete-game, two-hitter in the Giants' 6-0 win in the opener while three Giants' pitchers scattered four hits in a 10-0 win in the nightcap.

In the first game of Saturday afternoon's twin bill, Keystone jumped out to a 3-0 lead.  Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) got the scoring started with an RBI single that plated Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) before Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) followed with a single that scored Riscica and Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical)

Riscica would single home Straub again in the third inning to push Keystone's lead to 4-0 before the Giants added a pair of runs in the sixth.  Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) scored on an error before Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) scored on an RBI groundout by Straub to close out the scoring.

Pembleton was in full control on the mound, as the junior right-hander went the distance on the mound, striking out seven Cairn batters while allowing just two hits and hitting on batter while limiting the Highlanders to just three base runners for the game.

Riscica and Molina had two hits and two RBIs apiece to lead Keystone in the opener while Straub scored a pair of runs in the contest.

In the nightcap, the Giants scored four runs in the second inning on just two hits.  Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) singled home Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) to open the scoring before Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) knocked in a pair of runners with a single.  Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs) drove in Keystone's fourth run with a sacrifice fly that scored Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert)

A sacrifice fly from Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) in the third inning scored Riscica from third to make it a 5-0 lead and the Giants added a pair of runs in the fourth inning Castano and Guererro lacing RBI doubles.

Keystone would tack on three more runs in the top of the fifth with McLaughlin, Muccio, and Castano driving in runs to close out the scoring.

Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) picked up the win on the mound for the Giants, allowing two hits in four innings of work.  Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) allowed two hits while striking out a pair of Highlanders in two innings of work before Elvin Jorge struck out the side in the home half of the seventh to close out the win.

Muccio and Castano led the Giants offense with two hits and three RBIs apiece while McLaughlin also added a pair of hits and scored three runs in the second game of the day.

Keystone will return to action on Sunday at Richard Stockton College in a doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Pomona, NJ.
