Rogers Dominates on the Mound as Giants Defeat Griffins

Senior strikes out 10 in complete game as Keystone takes sole possession of first place in CSAC

La Plume, PA – Rob Rogers (Islip, NY/Islip) struck out 10 batters and scattered four hits to lead Keystone College to a 4-1 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy College on Friday afternoon as the Giants moved into sole possession of first place in the Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball standings.  Keystone, currently ranked 15th in the country, improves to 25-7 on the year and 13-1 in league play while the Griffins slip to 19-11 this spring and 11-2 in the CSAC.  The two teams will close out their regular season series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Gwynedd-Mercy.

Both teams stranded a runner in the first inning of Friday's game, and with a Gwynedd-Mercy runner on third base with one out in the top of the second inning, Rogers kept the scoreless with a great defensive play, knocking down a hard grounder up the middle and to get the second out of the inning before getting an inning-ending strikeout.

Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) led off the home second with a double to the left center field fence and came around to score when Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) hit a single up the middle and the Griffins' centerfielder misplayed the ball.  Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) then brought Riscica with a two-out single to right center to give Keystone a 2-0 lead.

Gwynedd-Mercy cut their deficit in half in the top of the third inning when David Blount scored on a single to center by Greg Brooks.

The Giants put runners on the corners in the bottom of the sixth inning on singles by Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) and Ramirez, but Gwynedd-Mercy starter Matt Rakus escaped the threat by getting a big, 3-6-3 double play.

Keystone put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to add a pair of insurance runs to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth inning.  Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) started the rally with a single and was pinch run for by Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and Ramirez followed with a walk.  The two runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and Riscica ripped a single to left field bringing both Montanaro and Ramirez home.

After allowing a leadoff single to start the ninth, Rogers retired the next three batters to seal his sixth victory of the season.  The senior right-hander allowed just four base runners to reach after the third inning in the complete game victory.

Gurman, Ramirez, and Riscica and Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) had two hits apiece in the win for the Giants.

Rakus suffered just his second loss of the season after allowing four runs on 11 hits in eight innings of work while striking out five batters on the day.  Brooks led the Griffins at the plate with a 2-4 performance.

Keystone will travel to Gwynedd Valley, PA on Saturday as the Giants and Griffins close out their regular season series with a key doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
