Aston, PA – Neumann University scored the only goal of Tuesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer game early in the second half and made it stand in a 1-0 victory over visiting Keystone College, delivering a serious blow to the Giants' postseason aspirations. The Knights improve to 5-8-2 on the fall and 4-3-1 in the CSAC while the Giants slip to 6-8-1 overall and 3-5 in the CSAC after suffering their fourth one-goal setback in league play.
Keystone's playoff fate will be determined on Saturday as the Giants host league-leading Cabrini College in a must-win game. In addition to a win over the Cavaliers, Keystone needs Cairn University to lose at Immaculata University and Gwynedd Mercy University to lose or tie their game at Summit University in order to qualify for the conference tournament.
Neither team was able to generate any sustained offense in the first half of Tuesday night's contest, with Neumann holding a 4-0 advantage in shots in the half, but the Knights only place one of those efforts on target which was saved by Keystone goalkeeper
Adam Zbiciak (Saint Johns, MI/St. Johns).
Neumann wasted little time after the intermission to break through as Jake McDevitt found the back of the net just 1:25 into the second half after taking a pass from the corner that was fed in by Christian Cortese with what would prove to be the game's only goal.
Zbiciak came up with three big saves to keep Keystone in the contest before the Giants placed their first shot on goal, an effort by
Brandyn Favero (Beamsville, Ontario/Blessed Trinity Catholic) that was denied by Neumann goalkeeper Shane Smith in the 74
th minute.
Eddy Enowbi (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) had a shot stopped by Smith in the 84
th minute before Favero shot high in the 85
th minute in the visitor's final bid at finding the equalizer.
Neumann finished the game with a 13-6 advantage in shots with a 7-2 margin in shots on goal. The Knights also earned nine corner kicks to none for the Giants.
Smith made two saves to pick up the shutout win in goal for the hosts while Zbiciak suffered the loss despite turning aside six shots on the evening.
Favero and
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) led the Giants with two shots apiece while Enowbi and
Alex Buchholz (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) both attempted one shot each in the setback.
Saturday's must-win regular season finale against Cabrini will kick off at 12:00 p.m. on Keystone's turf field in La Plume.
