Alfred, NY – Alfred State College improved to 25-5 on the season with a three-set victory over visiting Keystone College in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday. The Pioneers picked up their second win over the Giants (20-6) this fall, matching their feat at Keystone on September 19.
Alfred State won Saturday's opening set 25-15 before rallying to pick take a 2-0 advantage in the match with a hard-fought, 26-24 decision in game two. The Pioneers closed out the victory by taking another close set in the third stanza, winning 25-21.
Grace Hall powered Alfred State with 12 kills while Bryanna Godfrey added nine kills and 21 digs. Janae Hamilton and Jess Padley had eight kills apiece for the Pioneers while Lera Braun dealt out a match-best 40 assists.
Madison Webster added 17 digs while Madison Szpaicher picked up 14 digs and two service aces for Alfred State, who posted a .267 hitting percentage as a team in the win.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) recorded her eighth double-double of the year for Keystone with a match-leading 13 kills to go along with 10 digs and a pair of aces.
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added seven kills while
Taylor Beatty (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and
Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman) chipped in with four kills apiece.
Sydney Binkley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) led the Giants with 16 assists to go along with eight digs while Mosier dished out 15 helpers and added 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.
Pamela Heitman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) tied for match-high with 21 digs to pace the visitors defensively while
Ashley Williams (Virginia Beach, VA/Green Run) recorded a pair of blocks to lead the Giants, who hit .208 on the day as a team.
Keystone will make their Colonial States Athletic Conference playoff debut on Tuesday night when they host #6 Notre Dame of Maryland University in a first round matchup. The Giants are the #3 seed in this fall's postseason tournament.
