Rochester Tops Keystone in First Round of Chuck Resler Tournament

Giants will take on Ohio Northern in Saturday’s consolation game at 3:00 p.m.

Rochester, NY – The University of Rochester raced out to a 33-12 lead over the first 12 minutes of Friday's first round game of the Chuck Resler Tournament and never looked back on their way to a 90-64 victory over Keystone College in non-conference men's basketball action.  The Yellow Jackets, now 1-1 on the season will take on Vassar College in Saturday's championship game while the Giants (0-2) will play Ohio Northern University in the consolation game.
 
Holding a 10-4 lead three and a half minutes into Friday night's contest, Rochester embarked on a nine-point run to open up a 19-4 advantage.  Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) hit a three-pointer that cut Keystone's deficit to 23-10, but the Yellow Jackets then used 10-2 spurt to hold a 33-12 lead with 7:52 remaining in the first half.  The hosts would lead by as many as 32 points before taking a 54-25 lead into halftime.
 
Jared Seltzer led Rochester with 14 points and six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play while Daniel Schwartz chipped in 12 points for the Yellow Jackets, who shot 52.6 percent from the field in the first stanza while making nine three-pointers.
 
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello)'s six first-half points led Keystone and the freshman hauled in four boards in the period, as did Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello)Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) netted five points for the Giants, who shot 35.7 percent from the floor including a 21.4 percent effort from beyond the arc.
 
Drayton scored the first four points of the second half to bring Keystone to within 25 points, but Rochester countered with the game's next nine points to push their lead to 63-29 at the 16:18 mark.  The Yellow Jackets would lead by as many as 41 points in the second half before the Giants battled back to the final 26-point margin over the final five minutes of the game.
 
Seltzer finished with a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds for Rochester while Schwartz finished the night with 14 points.  Jacob Wittig and Michael Mangan added 10 points apiece for the hosts, who got a game-best five assists from Sam Borst-Smith.  The Yellow Jackets connected on 47.6 percent of their attempts from the floor in the win while going 42.3 percent from downtown and 82.6 percent from the free throw line.
 
Rochester held a slim, 41-39 edge on the glass for the game and forced the Giants into 24 turnovers on the night.
 
Drayton recorded the first double-double of his collegiate career on team-highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two steals.  Williams and Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) scored nine points apiece while Jones and James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) added eight points apiece for the Giants, who shot 36.9 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from three-point land, and 44.4 percent from the charity stripe.
 
Devin Strickland dished out a team-leading three assists for Keystone while A.J. Newell (Hackensack, NJ/Hawthorne Christian Academy) also collected a pair of steals in the loss.  Williams hauled in nine rebounds while Cooper collected eight boards for the Giants.
 
Keystone will look for their first win of the season on Saturday when they take on Ohio Northern in the consolation game of this weekend's tournament.  Opening tip is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the University of Rochester.
