La Plume, PA – Keystone College's women's basketball team erased a 17-point first half deficit on Wednesday evening against Rosemont College, but the Ravens used a late, 12-0 run to defeat the Giants, 78-72 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference. Rosemont salvaged a regular season split with Keystone to improve to 11-11 on the season and 7-6 in conference play while Keystone slips to 11-12 overall and 8-6 in the CSAC with two league contests remaining in the regular season.
Keystone defeated Rosemont 86-84 in the first meeting between the two teams after rallying from a 28-point deficit on December 6
th at Rosemont, but a second big comeback win was not in the cards for the Giants on Wednesday in La Plume.
Rosemont jumped out to an 18-9 lead over the first 5:18 of Wednesday night's contest, before Keystone narrowed their deficit to six points, 20-14, with 12:07 remaining in the opening half on an
Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) three-pointer. The Ravens responded with an 8-2 spurt and would lead by as many as 17 points before taking a 42-28 advantage into the intermission.
Rosemont's Kierra Smith led all scorers in the first half with 10 points while Liz Coyne added nine points and seven rebounds for the Ravens, who shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 2-4 from beyond the arc and 8-13 from the free throw line.
Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) paced Keystone with eight points and three assists in the first stanza while
AAliya Hayes (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted six points.
Cierra Hensley (Frederick, MD/Frederick) pulled down five rebounds while Cuomo collected four boards for the Giants, who connected on 27.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the half while going 2-9 from downtown and 8-11 from the stripe.
With the visitors holding a 56-41 lead just under seven minutes into the second half, Keystone embarked on a 24-3 to claim a 65-59 advantage with 7:13 left in regulation. Rosemont countered though with a 12-0 run to build a 73-65 edge with 2:18 left on the clock, but the Giants came right back as Cuomo hit a deep three-pointer and
Ashley Evans (Wooster, OH/Wooster) followed with a rare, four-point play to draw to within 73-72 with 1:21 left on the clock, but the Ravens scored the final five points of the game to seal the win.
Coyne finished with a double-double on game-highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead Rosemont, who got 14 points apiece from Leilani Naone-Carter and Domonique Sellers. Smith was the fourth player for the Ravens in double-figures with 10 points while Nymire Nelson added nine boards and six assists in the victory. The visitors connected on 41.3 percent of their field goal attempts on the night while going 2-8 from long range and 58.3 percent from the stripe.
Hayes and Cuomo netted 18 points apiece to tie for the Keystone team-lead with Cuomo adding eight rebounds on the night. Robinson added her fourth double-double of the season on 17 points and a game-best 10 assists while Hensley finished as the Giants' leading rebounder with 10 caroms to go along with three steals on the night. The hosts finished the game shooting 37 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from three-point range, and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Keystone will host Cairn University on Saturday afternoon in a CSAC tilt scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center. Prior to the game, the Giants will honor the team's five senior and will later recognize Keystone faculty as part of the Giants' Faculty Appreciation Day.
