Baseball Opens 2015 Campaign With a Pair of Wins

Giants defeat Olivet 9-2 before blanking the University of Minnesota Morris, 7-0

Fort Myers, FL – Keystone College's baseball team opened up the 2015 season with a pair of victories on Thursday as the Giants kicked off their spring break trip in Florida by outscoring their opponents 16-2 on the day.  Keystone (2-0) won their season-opener 9-2 over Olivet College before shutting out the University of Minnesota Morris in their second game of the day, 7-0.

In Thursday's first game, Olivet (1-6) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single, but Keystone responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to claim a 3-1 lead.  Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) hit a two run single before Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) scored on a RBI groundout by Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel).  The Giants stretched their lead to 7-1 with a four-run fifth inning as Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School), Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva), and Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) each collected RBI base hits before Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) brought home Ross with an RBI groundout.

After the Comets got a run back in the visitor's seventh, Keystone added single runs in the eighth and ninth inning to close out the scoring.  Lanfranco scored on an RBI groundout by Rojas in the home eighth before Luciano came home when Reyes hit into a fielder's choice in the ninth inning.

Hector Vargas (Queens, NY/Forest Hills) struck out seven batters over the first four innings and allowed one run on one hit.  Dan Maguire (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township) surrendered one run on four hits in three innings of work while fanning one while Austin Barefoot (Alexandria, PA/Tyrone Area) allowed just one hit and struck out a pair of batters while closing out the victory by pitching the final two innings for Keystone.

Corl and Reyes paced the Giants with three hits apiece in the win over Olivet with Corl, Rojas, and Reyes collecting two RBIs apiece.

In game two against the Cougars (3-3), Keystone took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) scored on an error off a ball hit by Corl before Lanfranco came home as Rojas grounded into a double play.  Corl scored the Giants' third run of the game on an error in the fifth inning before a Rojas single plated Darley in the seventh inning to give Keystone a 4-0 advantage.  Reyes then capped the scoring with a pinch hit, three-run home run in the home half of the eighth inning.

Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) earned the win after going six strong innings in which he scattered four hits while striking out four batters.  Felix Baez (San Juan, PR/Colegio Presbiteriano), Steve Aniska (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), and Charles Morreale (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) turned in a scoreless inning each to lock up the shutout win.

Rojas, Darley, and Luciano had two hits apiece to lead the Giants with Darley scoring a pair of runs.

Keystone will look to remain unbeaten on Friday afternoon when they take on Thiel College (5-1) in a game scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. in Fort Myers.
