Keystone Splits a Pair of Games on Final Day of Spring Break Trip

Giants will bring a 7-3 overall record back north from Florida

Fort Myers, FL – Keystone College's baseball team wrapped up their spring break trip in Florida on Wednesday by splitting a pair of games.  The Giants, who will bring a 7-3 overall record back north, overcame a 7-2 deficit to double up the University of Dubuque 16-8 in their first game of the day before dropping a 13-8 decision to St. Lawrence University in the nightcap.

In Wednesday's opener, the Spartans (4-6) used a pair of RBI singles and an RBI groundout to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Kyestone cut their deficit to a single run in the top of the third inning when Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) hit a two-run double to drive in Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) and Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ).  Dubuque got three runs back in the home half of the inning on a two-run double followed by another RBI groundout and took a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single.

Keystone cut their deficit to 7-5 with a three-run fifth inning as Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) drove in Rojas with a single before Eduardo Familia (Bronx, NY/Collegio Utesianode Estudios Integrados) hit a two-run base hit that plated Ross and Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial).  The Giants made it a one-run game once again the following inning as Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) scored on a sacrifice fly from Rojas.

The Spartans pushed their lead to 8-6 on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Keystone used a seven-run seventh inning to build a 13-8 lead of their own.  Ross scored on a Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) single before Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) scored on a sacrifice fly off of Lanfranco's bat.  Rojas drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Familia before Reyes and Darley both came home on an error on a ball hit by Tommy Walters (Trenton, NJ/Bordentown Regional).  Ross capped the inning with a two-run single that plated Walters and Rojas.

The Giants added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning with Darley knocking in Familia with a sacrifice fly before Lanfranco touched home on a Corl base hit.  Familia scored Keystone's final run in the ninth inning by coming home on an Alex Martinez (Bronx, NY/Saint Raymond High School for Boys) single.

Bzozowski went 3-4 at the plate while Corl, Reyes, and Ross had two hits apiece.  Rojas drove in four runs and scored twice, Ross added three RBIs and two runs scored, while Familia scored three runs.

Rob DePhillips (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) went 2.2 innings on the mound and was charged with six runs on six hits while striking out two batters.  Jesse Arnold (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) went 3.1 innings on the hill with two runs against on three hits to go along with one K before turning the ball over to Felix Baez (San Juan, PR/Colegio Presbiteriano) who allowed one hit while recording all outs of the seventh inning via the strikout.  Austin Barefoot (Alexandria, PA/Tyrone Area) was perfect in the final two innings to close out the win with a pair of punchouts.

In Wednesday's nightcap against St. Lawrence (4-1), the Saints took a 2-0 lead in the the top of the first inning before Keystone responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 5-2 advantage.  Rojas ripped a two-run home run before Herceg hit an RBI double.  Bzozowski and Joe Angelucci (Commack, NY/Commack) followed with RBI singles to give the Giants the three-run lead.

The Saints used a four-run fourth inning to take a brief, 6-5 lead before Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) hit a two-run single in the home half of the frame to put Keystone back in front by a run, but Saint Lawrence scored three runs in the visitor's fifth and four runs in the six inning to open up a 13-7 lead.  Angelucci scored Keystone's final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Muccio grounded into a double play.

Bzozowski went 4-5 at the plate while Muccio, Herceg, and Angelucci collected two hits apiece in the loss to the Saints with Muccio and Rojas collecting a pair of RBIs apiece.

Steve Aniska (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) started on the mound and allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out one batter in 3.1 innings of work.   Jack Simons (Great Falls, VA/Bullis School) yielded three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings before turning the ball over to Charles Morreale (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence), who allowed four runs on three hits to go along with a pair of Ks.  Josh Zilla (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) tossed three scoreless innings to close out the game for Keystone, allowing just one hit while fanning a pair of Saints.

Keystone is scheduled to open the Colonial States Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at last spring's CSAC runner-up, Gwynedd Mercy College.  Opening pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania.
