Cazenovia Hangs On to Edge Keystone, 3-2

Brown and Moranski score goals for Giants in loss

La Plume, PA – Visiting Cazenovia College built a 3-1 lead early in the second half of Wednesday night's non-conference women's soccer game at Keystone College and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Giants.  The Wildcats improve to 2-1-1 on the season while Keystone falls to 0-4-1 overall.

Cazenovia opened the scoring just 50 seconds in Wednesdays contest as Emily Graham snuck in behind the Giants' defense and beat Keystone goalkeeper Sarah Heintz (Glenside, PA/Abington) with a shot to the near post from six yards out with Briana Bailey assisting on the goal.  The visitors nearly doubled their lead minutes later, but a pair of fine saves by Heintz along with the crossbar kept the host's deficit at one goal.

Keystone pressured to equalize and nearly did so in the 14th minute, but Cazenovia netminder Kara Locey made a diving stop on Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley)'s shot from close range on a ball served on a restart by Rebecca Lewis (Abingdon, MD/Aberdeen).  The Giants appeared to have tied the game with 25 minutes left in the first half, but an apparent goal was called back after the referee spotted a handball on the play.

The Giants finally broke through with the equalizing goal in the 30th minute when Zana Brown (Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter) netted the first goal of her collegiate career.  Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, NY/Stamford Central) starting the scoring play by serving a corner kick into the box that Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) flicked on to Brown, who finished with a shot back across the face of goal in into the left side netting.

The score line stayed at 1-1 at halftime with each team firing off 11 shots each in the opening 45 minutes of play while Keystone held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.  Heintz made eight saves in the first half while Locey was credited with nine stops in the period.

Cazenovia forged back in front just 2:37 into the second half when Graham fed a ball to Bailey on a two on one break which Bailey ripped home to the far post to give the Wildcats the 2-1 lead.  The visitors then pushed their lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute when Graham made a long solo run down the left flank with the ball before beating Heintz for the second time on the day.  Bailey was credited with her second assist of the game on the goal.

Keystone cut their deficit to 3-2 with 18:41 remaining in regulation when Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, NY/New Paltz) scored her first goal of the season.  Ehrhart served a cross into the box that Moranski one-timed one net, but was denied by Locey.  The sophomore followed up her shot though and finished off the rebound chance to  pull the Giants to within a goal.

The Giants pressured heavily over the final 18 minutes of the contest, but were unable to find the equalizing goal to force overtime.

Keystone held a 21-14 advantage in shots for the game and had five corner kick chances while preventing Cazenovia from having any end-line opportunities.

Locey earned the win in net for the Wildcats after making 15 saves while Heintz suffered the loss despite turning aside nine shots by Cazenovia.

Keystone will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon as they host Notre Dame of Maryland University starting at 1:00 p.m.
