La Plume, PA – Senior goalie
Amy Denmon (Beaumont, PA/Lake-Lehman) set a school record with 20 saves on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Keystone College dropped a 6-0 decision to the University of Scranton in non-conference field hockey action. The Royals boost their record to 2-0 overall while the Giants remain winless in two contests on the young season.
Scranton nearly went ahead just two minutes into the game, but Denmon made a nice save before
Adrienne Mellot (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) recorded a defensive save on the rebound opportunity to keep the game scoreless. Keystone had a great chance at the other end minutes later as
Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) broke through on a breakaway, but Scranton goalie Christina Black made a nice sliding stop on the play to keep the Giants off the board.
Scranton broke the deadlock 13:05 into the contest when Meghan Kearney delivered a crossing pass from the right flank to Krista Osborne, who beat Denmon with a shot from the center of the goalmouth to give the Royals the 1-0 edge. The visitors then scored a pair of goals separated by just 1:16 to open up a 3-0 advantage in the game's 24
th minute with Jessica Pankey and Lara Haab netting unassisted tallies.
Alyssa Whitman pushed Scranton's lead to 5-0 going into halftime with back-to-back goals to end the period. Whitman's first tally was unassisted on a rebound off her own shot while Elizabeth Yorey assisted on Whitman's second marker of the afternoon.
The Royals extended their lead to six goals just over four minutes into the second half when Osborne deflected in a long shot from Pankey for her second goal of the game. That would mark the end of the scoring in the game thanks to Denmon, who finished the game with 10 saves in both halves.
Black finished the game with three saves to record the shutout in net for Scranton.
In addition to Denmon's record-setting performance in Keystone's cage, Mellot and
Justine Firmstone (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) added three defensive saves apiece and
Emily Fardoulis (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) was also credited with a defensive save for the Giants.
Dempster and
Genesis Pacheco (Mount Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) each recorded two shots apiece in the contest for the hosts, with Dempster placing both of her efforts on target.
Keystone will look for their first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon as they play host to King's College in a non-conference game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in La Plume.
