Morrisville, NY – Keystone College's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Morrisville State Tournament on Saturday afternoon to move their record to 2-1 on the season. The Giants defeated the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in four sets in the opening match before falling to MIT in three sets in the nightcap.
Junior outside hitter
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) was named to the All-Tournament Team following the completion of the tournament.
In Saturday's opener against the Trailblazers (1-2), MCLA took the first set 25-22 before the Giants rattled off three-straight 25-22 set wins of their own to win the match.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) led Keystone with 19 kills while
Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) put down 10 kills.
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added eight kills and
Ashley Williams (Virginia Beach, VA/Green Run) recorded seven kills for the Giants, who hit .278 in the match.
Sydney Binkley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) dished out 27 assists while
Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman) added 25 helpers of her own.
Taylor Beatty (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) had a team-best three blocks and Silas chipped in with a pair of blocks of her own.
Pamela Heitman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) paced the squad with 40 digs in the match,
Shaylah Ware (Newark, NJ/Science Park) collected 16 digs, and Binkley contributed 15 digs in the victory. Heitman and Williams also had two service aces apiece for Keystone.
Allison Clark led MCLA with 13 kills while Margaret Allen added 12 kills in the loss. Courtney Parent dished out 19 assists and Beatrice Lechler had 15 helpers for the Trailblazers, who were paced by Chanielle Enomoto's 25 digs.
In the Giants' second match of the day, MIT (1-0) opened with a 25-14 win in the first set before taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-8 decision in game two. The Engineers closed out the win with a 25-12 win in the third frame.
Zuchowksi paced Keystone with eight kills as the Giants hit just .071 in the setback. Binkley recorded seven assists and Mosier added six assists against MIT.
Heitman collected a team-best 13 digs, Binkley picked up seven digs, and Zuchowski contributed six digs for the Giants, who got a pair of blocks from
Monique Paogofie (Waianae, HI/Waianae).
Keystone will close out this weekend's tournament with a pair of matches on Sunday. The Giants will take on the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 11:00 a.m. before playing host Morrisville State at 1:00 p.m.
