ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) scored a game-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough as visiting Hamilton College picked up an 83-75 victory in in the final non-conference game of the regular season for the men's basketball team on Monday night in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Continentals level their record at 9-9 on the season while the Giants slip to 3-13 overall.
Keystone jumped out to a 14-6 lead over the first 3:43 of Wednesday's contest before Hamilton raced back with a 12-3 run to claim an 18-15 advantage at the 13:13 mark. The Giants countered with a 10-2 spurt to take a 25-20 lead midway through the period, but the Continentals went back in front for the remainder of the half on a layup with 6:38 showing on the clock.
The visitors would lead by as many as five points before taking a 44-41 edge into halftime as Drayton converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 0.2 seconds showing on the clock.
Hamilton was paced in the first half by Jack Dwyer and Peter Hoffmann, who scored nine points apiece with Hoffmann leading all players with nine rebounds in the opening stanza. Joe Pucci chipped in with eight points for the Continentals, who shot a solid, 52.6 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Drayton had a big first half to power Keystone offensively, netting 17 points to go along with a team-leading four rebounds.
Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) added eight points and a half-best five assists while
Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) contributed six points for the Giants, who shot 44.7 percent from the field in the opening frame including a 3-6 performance from beyond the arc.
Hamilton pushed their lead to 50-43 early in the second half before Keystone chipped away at the visitor's lead before going in front, 56-54, on a
Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) three-pointer at the 12:10 mark. The teams swapped the lead three times over the next two and a half minutes with the Continentals taking the lead for good on a three-pointer with 9:38 remaining in regulation.
Hamilton extended their advantage to 72-65 with 3:42 showing on the clock before
Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) followed up a
James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) trey with a field goal to bring the Giants to within two points with two and a half minutes remaining, but the Continentals countered with the game's next six points and went 7-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to close out the win.
Hoffman led Hamilton with 19 points and nine rebounds while Pucci netted 16 points. Dwyer finished with 12 points and a game-high eight assists while Wes Wilbur chipped in with 10 points and eight boards for the Continentals, who shot 49.3 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three-point range, and 78.9 percent from the free throw line. The visitors also held a 44-35 advantage on the glass and were plus-two (11-13) in the turnover department.
Drayton went 9-12 from the field to total his game-high 20 points for Keystone while Cooper netted 13 points. Peeples tallied 12 points and tied a season-best with seven assists to go along with four steals while
Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, CA/Rialto) led the Giants with five rebounds and two blocked shots.
The hosts connected on 45.5 percent of their field goal attempts on the evening including a 43.8 percent clip from beyond the arc while going 8-18 from the stripe.
Keystone will visit local rival Marywood University on Wednesday evening for a Colonial States Athletic Conference battled scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Scranton.
