Women’s Soccer Edged by Griffins, 1-0

Gwynedd Mercy scores game’s lone goal in 11th minute in CSAC win

La Plume, Pa. – Gwynedd Mercy University scored a goal in the 11th minute of Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Keystone College and made it stand for a 1-0 victory over the Giants.  The Griffins improve to 7-4-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play while the Giants slip to 6-6-1 on the year and 3-4-1 in the CSAC.

Gwynedd Mercy scored the game's with 10:40 elapsed as Anna Numerato took a feed from Meghan Petroski and curled a shot from 18 yards out on the left flank into the far corner of the net to put the Griffins ahead.

Keystone nearly pulled level with 20 minutes left in the half, but Gwynedd Mercy goalkeeper Kailey Hopkins made a pair of fine stops to deny Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) while another defender for the Griffins blocked a shot as the visitor survived the scramble in front of their own net to preserve the one-goal edge entering halftime.

The Giants trailed at halftime despite doubling up Gwynedd Mercy in shots over the opening 45 minutes of play, 8-4.

Keystone dominated the second half of play, but were unable to solve Hopkins despite owning a commanding, 10-1 advantage in shots.  Cortes, Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central), and Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, N.Y./New Paltz) all had shots miss just wide of the target as well

Hopkins picked up the win in goal for the Griffins after making six saves while Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) made two stops in Keystone's net.

For the game, the Giants held an 18-5 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.  The hosts also generated seven corner kick opportunities to four for Gwynedd Mercy.

Keystone will welcome Rosemont College to the turf field on Wednesday afternoon for another important CSAC contest starting at 4:00 p.m. in La Plume.
