Keystone Opens 2016 Campaign With 5-4 Triumph at Johns Hopkins

Three Giants pitchers combine to hold Blue Jays to just three hits in win

Baltimore, Md. - A trio of Keystone College pitchers held host Johns Hopkins University to just three hits on Saturday afternoon as the Giants opened the 2016 season with a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays, who are currently ranked #24 in the country.

Keystone starter Felix Baez (San Juan, PR/Colegio Presbiteriano de Puerto Nuevo) pitched four scoreless innings to start the game before giving way to Jesse Arnold (Stuart, FL/Port Saint Lucie), who picked up the win after scattering two hits in three innings on the hill. Yeison Andujar (Carolina, PR/Programa Educativo Alcance) recorded a six-out save while allowing one hit and no runs over the final two innings as the Giants (1-0 held off a come back bid by the Blue Jays (0-1).

Keystone took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bats of the season as Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) stole third before coming home as Billy Nelson (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) got caught in a rundown. The Giants doubled their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Nelson came around to score on an Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) double to left field.

Johns Hopkins cut their deficit in half in the home fourth on a sacrifice fly, but Keystone got the run back in their next turn at the dish when Tony Hunter II (Atlanta, GA/South Effingham) tripled down the right field line to bring home Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast). Chris Triano (Greenwich, CT/Rye) gave the Giants a pair of much need insurance runs in the visitors second by launching a two-run home run over the fence in left field.

The Blue Jays made it a 5-3 contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and cut Keystone's lead to one run on an RBI single in the home eighth, but Andujar stranded the bases loaded to close the frame and also held the tying run at second by getting a game-ending pop out in the ninth to seal the victory for the Giants.

Baez struck out four batters and walked four while allowing one run in the first four innings. Arnold allowed three runs on two hits and three free passes while fanning four over innings five through seven while Andujar struck out one batter and also walked one in the final to frames for Keystone.

Herceg and Reyes had two hits apiece while Triano's two RBIs powered Keystone offensively on the day as the Giants outhit the Blue Jays 9-3.

Carter Burns suffered the loss for Johns Hopkins after yielding three runs on four hits while striking out six batters in five innings of work before a trio of relievers combined to allow the final two Keystone runs on five hits in the last four innings.

Brian Lin, Daniel Albert, and Raul Shah accounted for the host's three hits in the loss.

Keystone will be right back in action on Sunday morning with a non-conference tilt against New Paltz. First pitch against the Hawks is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Johns Hopkins.
