Defenders Deal Giants 74-58 Setback in CSAC Action

Summit completes season-sweep of Keystone with road victory

La Plume, Pa. – Visiting Summit University used an 16-0 run to overcome an early first half deficit and never trailed again on their way to a 74-58 victory in a Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball contest in front of a spirited crowd in the Gambal Athletic Center on Wednesday night.  The Defenders improve to 3-17 on the year and 3-10 in league play after completing the regular season sweep of the Giants, who fall to 4-16 overall and 4-9 in the CSAC.
 
Keystone scored six of the game's first eight points before Summit scored 16-straight points to open up an 18-6 advantage at the 12:43 mark of the first half.  The Giants stormed by with an 10-1 run to draw to within 20-17 with nine minutes left in the frame on a three-pointer by Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston )
 
The Defenders pushed their lead back to eight points before the Monroe followed up a Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) field goal with a pair of good free throws to cut Summit's edge 32-30 at the 2:25 mark, but the visitor went into halftime ahead 36-31.
 
Abe Valentine recorded a first half double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Summit while Dan Decker contributed nine points for the Defenders.  The visitors shot 35.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 5-14 from three-point range and 7-10 from the free throw line.
 
Monroe paced Keystone's offense in the first half with nine points while Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) came off the bench to tally six points.  Monroe, DeAndre Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Knightdale), and Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, CA/Rialto) hauled four boards apiece in the period for the Giants, who converted on 32.4 percent of their attempts from the floor while going just 1-11 from long range while going a solid, 6-7 from the charity stripe.
 
Summit scored the first five points of the second half before Keystone used a 10-3 run to pull to with a pair at 44-42 with 14:06 remaining when Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) went 1-2 from the line.  The Defenders countered with a 14-4 run to hold a 58-46 advantage with 7:24 showing on the clock and would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way to close out the victory.
 
Valentine finished with game-highs of 24 points, 17 rebounds, and five assists to lead Summit to the win while Adam Brinkley also posted a double-double on 12 points and 10 boards.  Decker tallied 14 points, Dwayne Felder added 12 points, and Nick Peters tallied 10 points for the Defenders, who shot 38.1 percent from the field on the night including a 40.9 percent showing from long distance and a 77.3 performance from the line. 
 
Jones paced Keystone with 12 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals while Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) netted 10 points on the evening.  DeAndre Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Knightdale) finished with a team-best 10 boards to go along with nine points, a game-high three blocked shots, and a trio of steals.  Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) contributed nine points, six caroms, and a team-best three assists for the Giants, who went 30.3 percent on their field goal attempts while going just 2-14 from downtown and 55.2 percent from the stripe.
 
Keystone was plus-five in turnovers (13-18) for the game while Summit held a narrow, 49-46 advantage on the glass in the victory.
 
Keystone will look to snap a three-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon with a CSAC tilt against Cairn University starting at 3:00 p.m. in the Gambal Center.  The game is part of the CSAC's #Play4JaylenandJP" Day with a $2.00 entrance donation being charged with all proceeds going toward the cause.
