Dallas, Pa. – Misericordia University used a five-run sixth inning to open up a seven run lead and held on for a 10-7 victory over visiting Keystone College in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars lift their record to 26-10 on the season with the win while the Giants fall to 23-8 this spring.
Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
Brandon Eady (Bowie, MD/DeMatha Catholic) tripled to right field before coming home on a throwing error by the Cougars on the play, but Misericordia leveled the contest in their first at-bats on a sacrifice fly from Kenny Jarema.
The Cougars took a 3-1 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning as D.J. Navoczynski scored on a wild pitch before Miles Westrich hit an RBI single to left field to give the hosts a two-run edge. The Giants countered with a run in the fourth inning on an RBI base hit from
Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) before tying the game the following inning on
Chris Triano (Greenwich, CT/Rye)'s eighth home run of the season.
Misericordia went back in front, 5-3, in the home fifth on RBI hits from Mike Comerford and Jeremy DeCotiis before breaking the game open with five runs on three hits the following inning to build a 10-3 advantage.
Keystone would not go quietly though as Eady scored on an infield single by Triano in the visitor's seventh before the Giants pulled to within three runs by scoring three times in the ninth, but the visitors were unable to overcome the deficit despite getting RBI singles from
Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) and
Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) along with an RBI groundout by Triano in their final at-bats.
Misericordia starting pitcher Garrett Pelko improved to 4-0 after allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out five batters in six innings of work. Elliot Forde allowed one run in two innings, Steve Pabon picked up the first two outs in the ninth inning before Jim Tunison picked up the final out of the game with a strikeout to pick up the saves.
Comerford led the Cougars with three hits while Westrich paced the hosts with three RBIs.
Felix Baez (San Juan, PR/Colegio Presbiteriano de Puerto Nuevo) was charged with the loss for the Giants after yielding eight earned runs on nine hits to go along with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Jesse Arnold (Stuart, FL/Port Saint Lucie) gave up one hit and recorded one out in relief before turning the ball over to
Dan Maguire (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township), who gave up just two hits in a pair of scoreless innings.
Eady and Triano had three hits apiece to lead Keystone's offense with Triano driving in three runs.
Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) also had a pair of hits for the Giants, who held a slim, 13-12 edge in hits for the game.
Keystone will return home on Thursday afternoon for a non-conference game against Susquehanna University. First pitch between the Giants and Crusaders is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field.
