Softball’s Season Ends With Pair of Setbacks on Senior Day

Keystone eliminated from playoff contention after 1-0 and 6-1 losses to Cabrini

La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's softball team saw its Colonial States Athletic Conference playoff hopes dashed on Saturday with a pair of setbacks to Cabrini College at Edmunds Field.  The Cavaliers won a pitchers' duel in the opener, 1-0, before locking up the #2 seed in the upcoming CSAC playoffs with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.  Cabrini will take a 23-15 overall record into the postseason after finishing with a 19-3 mark in conference play while the Giants end the year with a 15-23 (10-12 CSAC) record.

Between games of Saturday's doubleheader, Keystone honored its two seniors, Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus) and Lindsey Bucklaw (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale Area).

Game 1

Cabrini scored the only run of Saturday's opener on a Kaitlyn Cooper RBI single in the top of the third inning.

Keystone put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third inning when Shannon Dermont (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Breelyn Johnson-Fite (Bogota, NJ/Bergen County Technical), but Cabrini starting pitcher Kylie Sharp worked out of the jam.  The Giants put runners on second and third with two outs in the following inning, but Rivera and Bucklaw were left their by Sharpe.

Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) broke up Sharp's no-hit bid with a single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded in scoring position and the Giants were unable to put the tying run on base the rest of the way.

Sharp picked up the win after allowing just one hit and one walk in five innings while Jenna Rodriguez picked up the save with a perfect final two innings.

Cooper and Taylor Mack led the Cavaliers with two hits each in the game one victory.

Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) suffered a hard-luck loss after tossing a complete game, five-hitter with two strikeouts for the Giants.

Game 2

Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Saturday's nightcap as Katie Thompson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) scored on a Cabrini error following a single from Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Our Lady of Lourdes Regional), but Cabrini scored a pair in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.  The Cavaliers tied the contest by plating a run on an error by the Giants before going ahead on an RBI base hit from Marissa Arpaugh.

Cabrini extended its lead to 4-1 in the visitor's fifth on a two-run home run down the left field line from Lindsay Savar before taking extending their lead to five runs on a two-run homer from Amber Dietrich which wrapped up the scoring for the day.

Jess Giordoni notched the win after yielding one run on three hits and eight walks in a complete game effort for the Cavaliers, who were paced offensively by Alpaugh's three hits.

Emily Faulkner (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley) was charged with the loss after giving up two earned runs on nine hits while picking up one strikeout in four innings in the circle before being relieved by Hughes, who gave up a pair of runs on four hits in the final three innings for the Giants.

Thompson, Long, and Hartman accounted for Keystone's three hits in the game two setback.
