Hackettstown, N.J. – Centenary University outscored Keystone College 17-5 in the fourth quarter of Wednesday evening's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball to pick up a 59-49 victory. The Cyclones lift their record to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play while the Giants slip to 5-11 on the season and 4-4 in the CSAC.
Keystone jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in Wednesday's contest before Centenary used an 8-1 run to claim a 10-8 edge midway through the first period. The Giants scored seven straight points to go back in front, 17-13, but the Cyclones scored the final four points of the frame to knot the contest at 17-apiece.
Centenary went back to the point in the second quarter and extended its advantage to as many as six points before holding a 33-29 edge at halftime after
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) scored on a layup for the final two points of the frame.
Julia Presant led all scorers with 13 points in the first half for Centenary, who shot 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 3-6 from three-point range and 6-9 from the free throw line.
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) paced Keystone with eight points in the opening half while
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./James M. Coughlin) netted seven points. Hodanich, Robinson, and
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) collected four rebounds apiece for the Giants, who connected on 40 percent of their attempts from the floor in the first two periods including a 4-11 clip from beyond the arc.
Trailing 37-31 early in the third period, Keystone rattled off nine straight points to take a 40-37 lead and the Giants held a 44-42 edge heading into the final 10-minute stanza after outscoring Centenary 15-9 in the frame.
The Cyclones netted the first six points of the four quarter and opened a six-point advantage before Hodanich made it a 52-49 ballgame with an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:19 remaining. That was as close as Keystone would come though as Centenary closed out the game by scoring the final seven points to outscore the visitors 17-5 in the fourth quarter.
Mallory George led Centenary with game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds while Presant (16) and Nicole Cartaino (12) also reached double-figures for the hosts. The Cyclones finished the contest shooting 41.7 percent from the field, 40 percent from long distance, and 57.7 percent from the line.
Hodanich paced Keystone with 13 points while Sugalski netted 10 points in the loss. Zuchowski pulled down a team-best seven rebounds while Hodanich, Sugalski, and Robinson each collected six boards. Robinson added three assists while Sugalski led the way with a trio of steals for the Giants.
The visitors went 32.8 percent from the floor on the night including a 21.1 percent showing from downtown while making three of six attempts from the free throw line as the hosts went to the line 20 more times than Keystone did.
The Giants held a 42-39 edge in rebounds on the night while both teams committed 18 turnovers in the game.
Keystone will visit Cairn University on Saturday afternoon for a CSAC tilt starting at 1:00 p.m. in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
