La Plume, Pa. – Marywood University advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey playoffs with a 1-0 victory over host Keystone College in the regular season finale for both teams on Wednesday night. The Pacers improve to 5-11 on the year and claim the #3 seed in the postseason tournament with a 4-3 mark in conference play while the Giants end the year 6-10 overall and 3-4 in the CSAC.
Neumann University's 3-2 victory over Cedar Crest College earlier on Wednesday afternoon made Wednesday night's matchup between Keystone and Marywood a battle for the final CSAC playoff spot.
Prior to Wednesday night's game, Keystone honored graduating seniors
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail),
Allison Berman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./E.L. Meyers), and
Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, N.J./Boonton).
Marywood scored the game's only goal with 4:51 remaining in the opening half of Wednesday's contest as Natalie Martine scored on a shot from the center of the Keystone cage following a scrum for a loose ball.
The Pacers would hold the one-goal edge at halftime along with an 8-4 lead in shots, though both teams placed four shots on target in the first 35 minutes of play.
Defense dominated in the second half as the two teams combined for just seven shots with four going to Marywood and three attempts by the Giants.
Martine came up with a big play in the 41
st minute by making a defensive save to deny Croasdale of the potential game-tying goal.
Kerri Mountz made five saves to earn the shutout win for Marywood, who will play at second-seeded Cabrini University in a CSAC semifinal next Wednesday.
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) turned aside four shots for Keystone in the loss.
Dempster,
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey), and
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) attempted two shots apiece for the Giants.
