La Plume, Pa. – Marywood University extended its winning streak to eight games on Tuesday by sweeping Keystone College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Edmunds Field. The Pacers improve to 12-13 overall and 12-2 in conference play while the Giants slip to 8-16 overall and 4-10 in the CSAC.
Game 1
Marywood took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of Tuesday's opener on a two-out, two-run single to center before taking control of the game by scoring five runs on four hits and one error to build a 7-0 advantage in the visitor's second.
The Pacers extended their lead to nine runs with RBI base hits in both the third and fifth innings.
Keystone broke up Marywood's shutout bid with two outs in the fifth inning when
Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) drove in
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) from second with a two-out single to right center, making it a 9-1 game.
Marywood's Kirstie Alvarez picked up the win after tossing a complete game, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five batters in the five-inning game.
Five Pacers had two hits apiece to lead Marywood's offense with Alvarez and Sam Reid driving in a pair of runs each as the visitor's held a 12-4 advantage in hits for the game.
Keystone starter
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) suffered the loss after being charged with seven runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings in the circle.
Abby Aniska (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) came on in relief and yielded two runs on five hits in the final 3.2 innings.
Hartman, Schantz,
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton), and
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) accounted for Keystone's four hits in the contest with Schantz and Dermont hitting doubles in the game one setback.
Game 2
Marywood took a 1-0 lead in the first at-bats of Tuesday's second game with an RBI groundout, but Keystone leveled the score at one-apiece in the bottom of the first inning when
Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) came home on an error by the Pacers on a ball hit by Dermont.
The Pacers swung back in front in the top of the second inning by scoring six runs on four hits to open up a 7-1 advantage, but Keystone answered back with five runs on four hits and three errors in the home half of the frame to cut its deficit to 7-6.
Schantz started the rally by launching a two-run home run deep over the left field fence before Dermont drove in Hughes with a sacrifice fly. Hartman and Loughney both came around to score on errors to make it a one-run game.
The score remain the same until the top of the sixth inning when Marywood scored three runs on three hits and one Keystone error to open up a 10-6 advantage and the Pacers would close out the scoring by adding a pair of runs on the visitor's seventh.
Alyssa Bavaro pitched a complete game for Marywood to pick up the win, allowing six runs on six hits while striking out a pair of batters.
Kaitlyn Epler led the Pacers with three hits while Brooke Labs drove in four runs for the visitors, who held an 11-6 advantage in hits for the contest.
Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Ashley Constable (Bangor, Pa./Bangor Area) pitched five innings and relief and allowed just one earned run on six hits while fanning three batters.
Schantz went 2-3 with a pair of RBI while Dermont also drove in two runs for the Giants in the game two setback.
