Softball Seniors Close Out Careers With Split Against Centenary

Keystone wins game one 9-1 before falling in final game of year, 10-4

La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College closed out the 2017 season by splitting a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Centenary University on Saturday at Edmunds Field.  The Giants eliminated the Cyclones from playoff contention with a 9-1, six-inning win in Saturday's opener before the visitors claimed a 10-4 decision in the second game to salvage a split of the season-ending twin bill.

Keystone finishes the year with a 13-23 overall record including an 8-14 mark in conference play while Centenary ends the spring with a 14-22 mark including a 12-10 showing in league contests.

Keystone honored the program's four seniors with a post-game ceremony on Saturday as Shannon Dermont (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton), Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional), Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area), and Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, Pa./Lake-Lehman) made their final appearances in the blue and orange to wrap up outstanding, four-year careers for the Giants.

Game 1

Centenary took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second inning on Saturday afternoon with a two-out, RBI single, but Keystone leveled the contest in the home half of the inning with a solo home run to straightaway center from Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom)

The freshman's home run was her team-leading eighth homer of the season, setting a new Keystone single-season program record.  Schantz broke the mark previously set by Abby Cohen in 2013.

Keystone went ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning as pinch runner Kassadi Woods (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson) scored on a sacrifice fly from Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) to give the Giants a 2-1 advantage.

The Giants extended their lead to 4-1 in the home half of the fifth as Keystone starting pitcher Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) helped her own caused with a two-out, two-run double to the wall in left center.

Keystone used the long ball to extend its lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning before walking off with two more runs.  Dermont laced a solo home run over the fence in left center before Long launched a two-run homer over the left field wall.

Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) came home on an RBI groundout from Schantz before Hughes ended the game by driving in Scialpi with a single to give the Giants the run-rule victory.

Hughes earned her fourth win of the season with an outstanding start, giving up one unearned run on just five hits while striking out three batters in the complete game victory.

Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) went 4-4 at the plate while Hughes drove in a game-high three runs as Keystone held a 15-3 advantage in hits in Saturday's opening game win.

Centenary starter Sammie Darling suffered the loss after yielding nine runs on 15 hits while picking up one strikeout for the Cyclones, who got their three hits from three different players in the game one loss.

Game 2

Centenary took a 3-0 lead in their first at-bats of Saturday's nightcap by taking advantage of three hits and three errors by the Giants.

Schantz brought Keystone right back into the game with a two-out, two-run home run deep over the wall in left center to cut the host's deficit to 3-2 before the Giants tied the contest at three-apiece in the home third with Hartman coming home on an error by the Cyclones.

Centenary scored four runs on six hits in the top of the fifth inning to open up a 7-3 advantage before plating three runs on two hits the following inning to open up a seven-run advantage.

Keystone got a run back in the home sixth when Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) drove in Scialpi with a double deep down the left field line to make it a 10-4 ballgame, but that would mark the end of the scoring for the game.

Centenary starter Jessica Hewitt went the distance to earn the win, yielding four runs on eight hits while striking out three batters in the complete game victory.

Justine Stefura, Ashley Eisenstein, and Raychel Piserchia had two hits apiece to power the Cyclones' offense as the visitors claimed an 11-8 edge in hits for the game.

Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) took the loss after pitching five innings and surrendering four earned runs on nine hits while fanning one batter.  Ashley Constable (Bangor, Pa./Bangor Area) was charged with three runs on two hits in a pair of innings in relief for the Giants.

Scialpi led Keystone with a pair of hits in the game two setback.
