Highlanders Slip Past Giants, 2-1

Bain scores Keystone’s lone goal while Hawkins makes 16 saves at Houghton

Houghton, N.Y. – Keystone College's field hockey team suffered a narrow, 2-1 setback at Houghton College on Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders spoiled the Giants' season opener.  The hosts built a 2-0 lead early in the second half and held off a comeback bid by the Giants to secure the win.

Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) scored Keystone's lone goal while Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) made 16 saves in a strong effort in goal for the Giants (0-1) in the loss.

Houghton (2-0) opened the scoring in the 10th minute of Saturday afternoon's contest as Tanya Hatton scored unassisted to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.  The hosts would hold the one-goal edge into halftime while outshooting Keystone by a 20-5 margin.

Hawkins kept the Giants within striking distance by making nine saves in the opening 35 minutes of play, but Hatton doubled Houghton's lead just two and a half minutes into the second half with her second goal of the day.

Keystone got on the board just over three minutes later when Bain scored an unassisted goal by knocking in a loose ball following a scrum in front of the Highlanders' cage to cut the Giants' deficit to 2-1.

Keystone created several dangerous looks over the final 29 minutes of the game, but were unable to find the equalizer as Houghton escaped with their second victory in as many days.

Highlanders' goalkeeper Elizabeth Piszker made six saves to pick up the win for the hosts, who outshot the Giants 30-11 for the game including an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Houghton doubled up the visitors in penalty corner opportunities, 6-3.

Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) led Giants with six shot attempts while Bain had two shots in the contest.

Keystone will return to action next Saturday when it plays host to Bryn Athyn College in a non-conference game starting at 4:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
