Baltimore, Md. – Notre Dame of Maryland University continued its strong start to the 2017 season by defeating visiting Keystone College in three sets in Colonial States Athletic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon. The Gators improve to 15-2 this fall and 3-0 in conference play while the Giants slip to 5-10 overall and 3-2 in league matches.
Notre Dame won Saturday's first set 25-18 before claiming a 2-0 advantage with a 25-13 triumph in the second frame. Keystone battled the hosts tightly throughout the third game and tied the set up at 23-apiece, but the Gators netted the final two points to secure the game and the match.
Sarah Sweet totaled a match-high 14 kills while Michaila Sheedy added eight kills for Notre Dame in the win. Jamie Reyes led all players with 33 assists while Mary Marquez picked up a match-best 17 digs for the Gators, who posted a .224 hitting percentage as a team on the day.
Taylor Beatty (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) paced Keystone's offense with nine kills while
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) put down seven kills in the match.
Malley Bowen (Owego, N.Y./Tioga Central) dished out a team-high 26 assists while
Victoria Homfeld (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) paced the Giants with 12 digs and a pair of service aces.
Beatty, Larkin, and
Amanda Hardy (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) contributed seven digs apiece with Hardy tying for a match-high with three blocks on the day.
The visitors hit .154 as a team in Saturday's loss at Notre Dame.
Keystone will return to action on Thursday with a pair of CSAC matches at Marywood University. The Giants will take on Cairn University at 7:00 p.m. before meeting the host Pacers at 9:00 p.m. in Scranton.
