CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The 2019 season for the Keystone College softball team came to an end on Friday as the Giants fell to Cedar Crest 10-2 and Centenary 8-4 in the CSAC Tournament, hosted by Wilson College.
The Giants end the season at 14-28 overall, making the conference tournament for the first time since 2013.
Three seniors played their final game for the program: Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge), Gabrielle Truesdale (Tunkhannock, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) and Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North).
The Cyclones went 1-1 today and will face the loser of Wilson vs. Cedar Crest tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
Game One: Cedar Crest 10, Keystone 2 (6 innings)
The Falcons scored four runs in the first and added five runs in the fourth to take the opening game of the tournament.
Overall, the Giants finished with three hits and were plagued defensively by three errors.
Trailing 4-0 in the third, freshman Lexy Johnson (Newark, Del./Delaware Military Academy) - the 2019 CSAC Rookie of the Year - came through with an RBI sacrifice fly to right to score junior Kassadi Woods (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson).
Down 9-1 in the fifth, Johnson executed yet another run-scoring sacrifice fly to plate senior Gabrielle Truesdale (Tunkhannock, Pa./Lackawanna Trail), to make it a 9-2 game.
Senior Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) finished 2-for-2 with one double while sophomore Paige Mokychic (Beaumont, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) went 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
Senior Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) suffered the loss as the righty went 5 â…“ innings, giving up six earned runs while striking out two and walking three.
Game Two: Centenary 8, Keystone 4
The Giants jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first but gave up five runs in the third and two more in the fourth to the Cyclones. Centenary outhit Keystone 12-9 and both teams committed three errors.
Offensively, junior Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) - the 2019 CSAC Player of the Year - went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Truesdale went 2-for-3. Johnson went 2-for-4 with one double and one run scored.
Freshman Brittany Vasquez (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) finished 1-for-3 with one RBI while Monetti tallied one RBI. Woods went 1-for-2 with one run scored while Mokychic tallied one hit and one run.
Hughes was tagged with the defeat, tossing all seven frames while giving up four earned runs and walking two. The righty forced 11 flyouts and 10 groundouts in her final game in the circle for the Giants.
