Giants Split With Gators

Keystone took game No. 1, 2-1, before falling, 6-2, for its first conference loss of the season.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Keystone softball took game No. 1 before taking its first conference loss of the season with a Wednesday-afternoon split against Notre Dame of Maryland in Colonial States Athletic Conference action at the CCBC Dundalk Softball Field.

The Giants won the first game, 2-1, before falling, 6-2, to the Gators.

With the First Round of the CSAC Championships just three weeks away, the conference standings are starting to take shape with Keystone now standing at 5-1 (11-9 overall) tied for first place with Rosemont.

Notre Dame MD sits at sixth in the standings with a 2-4 record (5-9 overall).

Game 1: Keystone 2, Notre Dame MD 1

A hot start and a feisty finish.

Giants plated their two runs in the opening frame on a two-run homer courtesy Paige Mokychic (Beaumont, Pa./Tunkhannock Area).

Over the next six innings, a runner from either team reached third base only twice — Lexy Johnson (Newark, Del./Delaware Military Academy) both times.

The Gators threatened in their last chance in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runners on and only one out, prompting Giants' starter Cienki to return to the pitching circle.

After a groundout moved runners over to second and third, Candace Forgach-Aguilar tapped a slow dribbler to the left side with no throw on the play to bring in a run and make it a one-run ballgame.

However, Cienki closed the game out by inducing a fly out to right field for the win — her sixth in the pitching circle this season.

Game 2: Keystone 2, Notre Dame MD 6

NDMU jumped out first this time, plating six runs on six hits through the first two innings — all with two outs.

Keystone got two runs back in the third inning, starting with back-to-back-to-back singles from Kabrina Birmingham (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City), Johnson and Alyssa Booth (Holland, Pa./Council Rock North) for one score, but the Giants were only able to capitalize for an additional run before being retired thrice swinging on strike three.

No runner from either side got past second base the rest of the way as the Gators delivered the Giants' first conference loss of the season.

Notre Dame pitcher Jessie Leatherwood got the complete-game win with four hits given up and seven total strikeouts, recording seven of the first nine outs of the game.

Inside The Box Score

  • Johnson went a combined 2 for 5 on the afternoon with a double, three walks, one run scored and one stolen base. Defensively, the senior third baseman recorded three putouts and seven assists.
  • Jordan Frye (Cheltenham, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) also had a busy afternoon at second base with four putouts and eight assists while pitching 2-1/3 innings of relief in game No. 1.
  • NDMU catcher Miranda Burton powered the Gators through game No. 2 with a 2-for-3 outing and two RBIs.
  • Freshman Bethany Newbold recorded four putouts in center field and also contributed two RBIs on a double in Notre Dame's win.
