LA PLUME, Pa.- The Keystone College baseball team battled back from a late deficit to defeat No. 19/24 and No. 2 seed Penn State Harrisburg 12-8 Friday afternoon at Christy Mathewson Field.
Harrisburg scored first in the second inning off a sacrifice fly and added another one in the fourth. They scored one more time with an RBI double in the fifth to go up, 3-0.
Keystone finally broke the shutout in the sixth as Andy Rivas (Bronx, N.Y./Academy for Language and Technology) crushed a home run to dead center and Hagan ripped a single to make it a one-run game. The Nittany Lions had a four-run seventh as Coy Schwanger tallied a two-RBI single and Lucas Floyd smoked a two-run home run to right center.
The Giants responded in a big way as they added six runs as Rivas hit his second home run of the game. Griffin Yastremski (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) later provided a two-run triple, and Hunter Rauch (Lincoln, Del./Cape Henlopen) tallied an RBI single to take an 8-7 lead.
A sacrifice fly from Harrisburg in the top of the eighth tied the game at eight. Keystone would add some much-needed insurance runs as they scored four times in the bottom of the eighth from a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, a two-run single by Yastremski, and a fielder's choice.
The Nittany Lions tried to mount a comeback in the ninth, but they were unable to capitalize.
Rivas and Nate Ewing (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) both had three hits. Yastremski, Robert Estrada (Maracay, Venezuela/James J. Ferris), and Carlos Pascual (Paterson, N.J./International) tallied two hits. Rivas and Yastremski led the team with four runs batted in.
Quinn Holt (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) started and went 4.1 innings with a punchout. Ewing would get the win as on the mound as he tossed the last two innings with a strikeout.
Keystone (34-9) will face Penn State Harrisburg again in the conference championship tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
