Second Quarter Struggles Lead to Shutout Loss against Southern Virginia

LA PLUME, Pa.- A challenging second quarter would be the difference for Keystone College football as they fell at home to Southern Virginia University 42-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Knights scored on the opening drive of the game as quarterback Devin Watson found Jalen Lackey from nine yards out.

Keystone was able to drive down the field on their first offensive possession, but a missed field goal diminished that drive.

Southern Virginia's offense stalled their next two possessions as they were forced a punt and turned the ball over downs.

The second quarter is where the game turned upside down as the Knights put up 26 points in that quarter. After Southern Virginia turned the ball over on downs a second time, they were able to force a Giants three-and out. They were able to score again on a four-yard rushing score by Watson.

The Knights would get the ball back following the kickoff as the Giants kick returners were unable to gain possession of the football. They would capitalize on the special team blunder with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Watson to Javen Bell.

On the next Giants offensive drive, Ty Smith recorded a pick-six to put the squad up, 26-0. The turnover woes for Keystone continued as the Knight forced a fumble and returned inside the Giants 10-yard line. They would end up scoring again as Watson found tight end Henry Audette from four yards out.

The start of the second half was a rough one for the Giants as they couldn't handle the Knights opening kickoff which resulted in them being down on their own three-yard line. Southern's Virginia's defense came in clutch as they forced a safety.

Antonie Mills closed out the scoring for Southern Virginia with an eight-yard rushing touchdown on their first second half drive.

Frankie Leyshon (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) completed eight passes for 60 yards with one interception. Zamir Poteat (Philadelphia, Pa./West Philadelphia) was the team's leading rusher with 26 yards. Tavious Menifee (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) recorded 26 receiving yards.

James Craig (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) led the Giants defense with eight total tackles while Sean Owens (Waymart, Pa./Western Wayne) and Marcus Williams (Wayne, N.J./William Penn) both had seven. Jeremiah Ortiz (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) punted six times for 229 yards. He averaged 38.2 yards a punt.

Keystone heads to Maine Maritime Academy next Saturday.
