BALTIMORE, MD- Madden Bredek (Phoenix, AZ/Shadowridge) scored the equalizer and Marcos Louzada (Guacui, Espirito Santo, Brazil/The Webb School) converted the go-ahead penalty kick as the Keystone College men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 United East Conference victory at Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday afternoon.
The Giants answered a second-half deficit with two goals less than 10 minutes apart, while James Kallens (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) finished with five saves to help secure the road win. Keystone improved to 6-8-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Following a scoreless first half, the Giants generated seven shots over the final 45 minutes and scored on two of their three shots on goal for the afternoon.
Barrett Wood (Norfolk, VA/Matthew Fontaine Maury) recorded Keystone's first attempt just 1:24 into the match, sending a shot wide left. The Giants kept Notre Dame off the scoreboard throughout the opening half, with none of the hosts' three shots reaching Kallens on target.
Keystone began creating more opportunities after the break. Bredek sent a shot high in the 50th minute, and Aiden Cummings (Baltimore, MD/Mount Saint Joseph) followed with an attempt wide right in the 61st. At the other end, Kallens made his first save of the afternoon at 53:33 to keep the match scoreless.
Notre Dame broke through at 65:37, but Keystone needed just 1:40 to respond.
Lenskey Raoul (Neptune Township, NJ/Neptune) put a shot on goal that was stopped at 67:17, and Bredek scored at the same timestamp to bring the Giants even at 1-1. The goal gave Keystone an immediate answer and set up the opportunity to take the lead later in the half.
Kallens helped keep the score level with saves at 68:57 and 75:24. Cummings added another attempt at 76:29 as the Giants continued looking for the go-ahead goal.
That opportunity came at 77:09, when Louzada stepped to the penalty spot and converted to give Keystone a 2-1 advantage with 12:51 remaining.
The Giants protected the lead through the closing minutes, with Kallens making two late stops to finish the job. He turned away a shot at 88:22 before making his fifth and final save at 89:17, preserving the one-goal margin through the final whistle.
Bredek and Cummings led Keystone with two shots apiece. Louzada, Raoul, Wood and Beckham Hash (Harrisonburg, VA/Spotswood) each added one attempt, with Hash's shot in the 89th minute providing another late opportunity for the Giants.
Kallens played all 90 minutes in goal and made all five of his saves in the second half. Keystone's defense held Notre Dame scoreless over the final 24:23, giving the Giants time to turn the deficit into their fourth conference victory of the season.
The Giants return home to take on their final conference and non-conference games of the regular season. Keystone hosts Penn State Abington on October 21, before rounding out the year against McDaniel College on October 28.
