Giants Sweep Notre Dame of Maryland, Notching First Two Wins in United East Play

LA PLUME, PA- The Keystone College baseball team took down the Gators in the team's first twin bill of United East games this season, 14-4 in game one, followed up by a 10-0 shutout in game two. Spectacular pitching and offensive prowess proved to be to much for the Gators to overcome, with the Giants earning the sweep over their United East foe.

Game 1: (Keystone 14- Notre Dame of Maryland 4)

The Gators struck first in game one, knocking in two runs to earn the early 2-0 lead in the second inning of play. The Giants responded in the bottom half of the frame, knocking in a run from a Dee Rice (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) single to third base. Ethan Schimony (State College, Pa./State College Area) beat the throw home, scoring the Giants first run of the contest. The third and fourth inning of play remained rather quiet, with each team earning just one hit through both innings. The Giants offense exploded in the fifth inning, resulting in four runs, taking their first lead of the contest.

Colson Bennett (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) laid down a perfect bunt in the inning, with the Gators throwing the ball away. Both Dee Rice (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) and Ray Moreta (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) ran across home plate to take the lead for KC. The Giants were not finished in the inning though. Dante Ruby (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) sent a ball to deep center field, earning a double off the hit. Cooper Fesh (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) and Colson Bennett (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) both crossed home plate to give the Giants the 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. Dee Rice (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) sent a sacrifice fly out to left field in the sixth inning, giving Ray Moreta (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) a chance to score, resulting in the sixth run for the Giants.

KC kept the pressure on in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring three runs in the two frames. Carlos Pascual (Paterson, N.J./International) took home plate after watching a wild pitch slip past the Gators catcher in the sixth inning. Notre Dame knocked in two runs in the top half of the seventh inning, but the Giants responded right away, matching the Gators run total in the inning. The eighth inning was all Keystone needed to take down the Gators, as the Giants scored the games final three runs, taking a 14-4 United East Conference win in game one.

Game 2: (Keystone 10- Notre Dame of Maryland 0)

The Giants and Gators started out game two in a defensive battle, with neither team finding much offense through the first two innings of play. Keystone struck in the third, knocking in four runs. Benny Hess (Reading, Ohio/Reading Community) singled to right field, scoring both Colson Bennett (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Dee Rice (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman). KC was not finished though, as Emilio Portes (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) tripled to right center, scoring the speedy Benny Hess (Reading, Ohio/Reading Community). Portes scored shortly after on a passed ball.

Ryan Cooper continued to dominate on the mound, allowing just four hits in six innings worked on the mound. The Giants defense stood tall throughout the entirety of the game, allowing just four hits. Keystone struck once more in the seventh inning, knocking in yet another four runs. Benny Hess (Reading, Ohio/Reading Community) once more found a base, singling to right field, scoring Carlos Pascual (Paterson, N.J./International). Emilio Portes (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) continued to dazzle by knocking a three run home run out to left center field, scoring both Benny Hess (Reading, Ohio/Reading Community) and Anthony Clements (Canton, Mich./Salem) to give the Giants the 8-0 lead. Jonathan Santiago's (Dunnellon, Fla./Citrus Springs) single to center field gave the Giants the two last runs to take wind out of the Gators, resulting in a 10-0 win for the home team.

KC heads on the road for their next United East match up, facing off against Rosemont College on April 1. The Giants returns home for some holiday action on April 4 as the team takes on St. Mary's College of Maryland in a United East doubleheader showdown.
