La Plume, PA (2-20-09) - The Keystone College men's basketball team ended their 2008-09 regular season slate with a disappointing 65-52 loss to Gwynedd-Mercy on Thursday evening, however shortly after their loss they learned that they had wrapped up the third seed in the 2009 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs and secured themselves a home game.
The Giants (17-8) will welcome Centenary College (13-12) to campus on Saturday February 21 at 3pm for a CSAC quarterfinal contest. The winner of Saturday's game will advance to Tuesday's semi-finals.
In Saturday's other quarterfinal game, fourth seed Marywood University (15-10) will host fifth seed Baptist Bible College (10-13). Top seed Gwynedd-Mercy College (20-5) and second seed Cabrini College (19-6) drew first round byes and each will host a semi-final game on Tuesday.
The Keystone-Centenary contest will mark the rubber game in the season series with each team having won on its home court.
The teams first met on December 4 at Keystone with the Giants recording the 72-65 victory. In that contest
Spencer Lunger (Lake Winola, PA/Tunkhannock) came off of the bench to lead three Keystone players in double figures with 22 points.
Tercel Taylor (Jackson, MI/Jackson) added 21 and
Michael Kelly (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) 13. The Giants forced 17 Centenary turnovers in that game, while committing just four. The Cyclones were led by the duo of Andrew Baker and Ryan Kearney, as they combined to score 50 of their team's 65 points. Baker poured in a game high 30 points, including a 10-14 effort from the charity stripe, while Kearney added 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The teams met for the second time this season just two weeks ago on February 7 in Hackettstown, NJ with the Cyclones recording the 84-77 victory. The Giants once again did a great job pressuring the ball as they forced 25 turnovers, however the Cyclones placed five players in double figures as they turned in a solid afternoon of shooting.
The Cyclones shot 57.4% from the field, including 65% in the second half, while hitting on 13 of 20 three-point attempts and 17 of 21 free throw attempts. Will Atkinson, who was held scoreless in the first meeting of the year, hit on eight of nine three-point attempts to lead the way with 30 points. Once again Lunger was Keystone's top gun connecting on six three's on his way to a 22 point outing.
Malcolm Boone (Sugar Loaf, NY/Warwick) added 18 and
Kenneth Hardnett (Plant City, FL/Plant City) 11.
A Keystone victory would advance the Giants to a Tuesday night contest at Cabrini, while a loss would end the Giants' season.
