Kean hands Giants first loss at regionals

Lakewood, NJ (5-15-09) - Despite a three-run ninth inning, the Keystone College baseball team was held at bay most of the game as Kean University advanced to the title game of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional with a 6-3 victory over the Giants.

The Giants now must win three consecutive games if they want to punch their ticket to the Division III World Series in Wisconsin.  Keystone will await the winner of the Elizabethtown/TCNJ game that suspended Friday night due to fog.

The Giants and the winner of that game will play on Saturday one hour after the completition of the suspended game for the right to face Kean at 5pm in the championship game.  Should Kean lose that first championship game, then the same two teams would turn around for a winner take all game on Sunday at 1pm.

The loss drops the Giants to 39-5 and ends their win streak at 27 straight.  Ironically Kean was also the last team to defeat Keystone, that setback coming in March.  Kean moved to 37-6 with the victory.

Esteban Meletiche provided all the Keystone offense, as the CSAC Rookie of the Year hit a two-out bases clearing double in the top of the ninth to help Keystone cut the lead to 6-3, as the Giants would get no closer.

Eric Groff and Jayson Rohena each collected two hits, as the Giants knocked out 10 on the day.  Kyle Conrad, Ryan Smyth, Drew Boandl, Rya Jackson and Jimmy Ferraro all recorded a hit each.

Sean Brewer worked seven and two-thirds to suffer the loss, as he allowed six runs on 11 hits while striking out six.

Ryan Gibbons and Lee Cavico each collected three hits for Kean with Cavico driving in two.
