Six run fifth inning propels Giants to 10-3 victory

Newark, NJ (3-31-10) - Keystone College used a two-out six run outburst in the fifth inning to take a non-conference contest with Rutgers-Newark, 10-3.

With the victory the Giants moved to 10-5 on the year, while Rutgers-Newark falls to 6-11.

Keystone knocked out 15 hits on the afternoon with Esteban Meletiche, Eric Groff, Ryan Smyth, Angel Fargas and Donald Reese each picking up a pair of hits.  Meletiche and Reese each homered as part of their hit totals.

The Giants got onto the board in the first when Meletiche hit a one out home run to left.  They would add another run in the fourth when Reese singled home Smyth for a 2-0 lead.

After two quick outs in the top half of the fifth, Keystone strung together six hits in pushing across five runs.

Meletiche drew a two-out walk and after taking second on a wild pitch, came around to score on a Groff single up the middle.  Fargas followed with a double to left-center to plate Groff to push the lead to 4-0.

Smyth kept the hit parade going with another double to left-center to score Fargas.  After an Andy Vega single put runners on the corners, a wild pitch would allow Smyth to score.  Reese followed with a two-run shot down the right field line.

The Giants added single runs in the seventh and eight on RBI singles by Jimmy Ferraro and Meletiche.  Reese finished the day with three RBI, while Meletiche knocked in two.

Brad Higgins worked a solid five innings to earn the win.  Higgins did not allow a run in scattering five hits and striking out three.  The junior hurler did not walk a batter.

The Giants return to action on Saturdat when they travel #22 Cortland State for a 1pm game.
