Giants pound out 17 hits in opening round win over Centenary

La Plume, PA (5-12-10) - Keystone College pounded out 17 hits, while scoring in all eight innings in which they came to the plate, as the Giants rolled by Centenary College 11-1 in the opening round of the 2010 CSAC baseball playoffs.

The Giants, who are ranked 25th in the latest D3baseball.com poll, advance to play Gwynedd-Mercy College at 3pm on Friday at Bear Stadium in Boyertown.  The Griffins advanced to the winner's bracket with an 11-7 victory over Neumann University.

Keystone moves to 27-7 on the year, while Centenary falls to 20-19.  The Cyclones will face the Neumann University on Friday at 11am.

Edwin Padua, Ryan Smyth and Ray Jackson each belted out three hits each as the Keystone offense started clicking early.

The Giants scored twice in the first, one on an overthrow following a Padua single and once on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead.  They would add single runs in each of the next three innings to build a 5-0 advantage after five.

After an Andy Vega single added two more in the fifth, a Groff home run, his first of the game, in the sixth extended things to 8-0.

The Giants added a single run in the seventh and two in the eight, with Groff's second homer of the game driving in two.

Groff capped off the day by driving in three and scoring twice, with Vega also recording a three RBI game.  Padua finished with three hits, which included a triple, while also driving in two.  Jackson added two runs and an RBI to this three hit day.  Yazy Arbello also added a multi-hit game with a pair of singles.

Jeff Frost was nearly flawless, working the first six innings, allowing one hit and striking out nine in earning the win.  Frost did not walk a batter.

The trio of Sean Murphy, Sean Brewer and Victor Lara each worked an inning in relief to close out the game.
