Philadelphia, PA (4-6-11) - For the second consecutive year the Keystone College baseball team had a chance to upend a Division I program on their home field in the late innings. Unfortunately, for the second consecutive year the Giants dropped a one run decision, this time falling to University of Pennsylvania, 8-7.
With the victory the Quakers move to 13-10 on the season, while Keystone falls to 11-8.
A two out single in the bottom of the eight-inning by Brandon Engelhardt proved to be the game winner for Penn, breaking what was a 7-7 tie. The Quakers needed to come from behind to even get to that point, having scored two runs in the sixth to draw even with the Giants at seven.
Cody Thomson worked the final two innings to earn the win for Penn, while Mike Rossi absorbed the loss for Keystone. Rossi worked two innings allowing one run while also striking out three.
Things did not start promising for the Giants as the Quakers jumped out early by scoring four runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Keystone cut the deficit in half in the third, scoring on a Brian Henry home run and an Andy Vega RBI single. The Quakers answered back in the bottom of the inning, increasing their edge to 5-2.
The Giants roared back with a five run fifth inning which was highlighted by a three run blast by Andy Vega. Esteban Meletiche added a RBI single, while Andrew Siano chipped in with a RBI double, as the Giants took a 7-5 lead.
Penn's two runs in the sixth that helped knot things up once again came without the benefit of a hit, taking full advantage of three walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Fernando Perez collected three hits as part of a 15-hit Keystone attack, as the Giants out-slugged the Quakers 15-7.
Meletiche, Siano, Vega, and Edwin Padua all collected two hits each. Vega led the Giants with four RBI.
The Giants will return to action with a key three-game conference series with Gwynedd-Mercy College. The Giants and Griffins will battle at Keystone on Friday at 3pm before taking things to Gwynedd for a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
