Lakewood, NJ (5-17-12) – Jhon Comas may not have started the game, but he sure knows how to end one.
The junior, who was an early game replacement for Andrew Siano, delivered a game winning two out single to right field in the bottom of the ninth to score Miquel Castano, as Keystone College scored five runs in the last two innings to knock off Ramapo College 5-4 in a winner's bracket game in the Mid-Atlantic Regional at FirstEnergy Park.
The Giants now march on to a Friday showdown against either Kean at 4:30pm
With the victory Keystone moves to 37-6 overall, while Ramapo falls to 32-14.
After being stymied for seven innings, the Keystone bats finally received their wake up call in the eight as Castano walked and Brian Del Rosso singled to center to get things started. Esteban Meletiche followed with a great at bat, working the count full, fouling off several pitches in the process. Meletiche then delivered a frozen rope to deep left center for a bases clearing triple for Keystone's first runs.
Comas followed up with a hit of his own, driving a single through the right side to score Meletiche as the Giants cut the lead to 4-3.
Comas promptly stole second, putting the tying run on second with no one out, but a pair of ground outs sandwiched around a strike out stranded the potential tying run.
Winning pitcher Emmanuel Roman, who moves to 2-0 on the year, worked the ninth, striking out one and inducing a double play to keep the Giants in it.
Trailing 4-3 entering the ninth
Austin Straub led off the inning with a line single down the right field line and was removed for pinch runner Tyler Caserta. Gaston Rojas followed by sacrificing Caserta to second, putting the tying run in scoring position.
Castano then singled to short right field to out Keystone runners on the corners. Del Rosso knotted the score by laying a bunt down the first base line that not only scored Caserta, but saw Del Rosso reach safely, sliding under the tag.
With runners on first and second, a Meletiche ground out move everyone up 90 feet to set the dramatic stage. Comas than delivered the winning hit to right and was promptly mobbed by his teammates as he circled the infield.
Comas finished with a 3-4 day, driving in two, while Del Rosso also picked up three hits, scoring once and driving in one. Meletiche drove in a pair, while Castano scored twice.
Rob Rogers started for the Giants, working seven innings, allowing four runs, three earned and striking out two in a gritty performance. Adam Krebs worked a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two in the process.
For the second straight day the Giants fell behind 1-0 to start the game as the Roadrunners took advantage of a pair of walks when Ian Osterman found the hole with a two-out single to left to bring around the game's first run.
The Giants had trouble finding their stroke against PJ Cerreto, managing only a walk through the first two innings as the Ramapo hurler recorded five of the first six outs via strikeouts. Keystone's first threat came in the third, as Del Rosso and Comas reached with singles, but a Bzozowski strike out ended the threat.
Ramapo was able to put two runners on in the second, but Rogers induced a ground out to end the inning.
Rogers managed to keep the Giants in the game through the middle innings, including getting out of a two on, two out situation in the sixth, but the Keystone offense was set down in order in the fourth and fifth innings without so much as a threat. The Ramapo hurler had set down eight in a row at one point, until a two-out sixth inning single by Bzozowski ended that streak.
The Roadrunners used a three run seventh inning to give themselves some breathing room at the time in what had been a one run game since the first inning. After a groundout to start the inning, Ramapo strung together three straight hits to push across their first run of the inning. A fielder's choice and a throwing error on first baseman Frank Mormino allowed the second run to cross. Este ban Meletiche made a great diving stop of a ball headed into right-field off the bat of Joseph Somma, but, was unable to throw him out at first allowing the third run of the inning.
