Cabrini Prevails in CSAC Championship Game, 90-74

Keystone closes strong 2012-13 campaign with an 18-10 overall record

Radnor, PA – Keystone College's men's basketball team battled last year's NCAA National Runner-Up Cabrini College to the very end in Friday night's  Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship Game, but the Cavaliers ultimately prevailed, 90-74 to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Cabrini improves to 22-5 on the season while the Giants close another fine season with and 18-10 mark after making their second straight appearance in the conference title game.

Cabrini built a 13-4 lead over the first 4:15 of Friday night's rematch of last season's CSAC Championship game before the Keystone cut it to 15-10 just over a minute later as Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) hit a pair of three-pointer sandwiched around a Cavalier field goal.  The Giants cut their deficit to four points with 12:12 to play in the first half before the hosts used a 7-2 run to hold a 26-16 advantage with just over nine minutes showing on the clock.

Candemeres' fourth trey of the first half pulled Keystone to within 35-29 at the 5:18 mark before Cabrini restored their 10-point advantage on a layup with just over two and a half minutes left in the period and would hold a 42-34 lead at halftime as the Giants got a key defensive stop at the halftime buzzer.

Cabrini, who shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play, was paced by Jon Miller's 11 points while Aaron Walton-Moss and Fran Rafferty netted six points apiece in the frame.

Keystone was paced Candemeres, whose 12 points and four assists led all players in the first half.  Mike Kelly (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) added eight points and Tim Benedix (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) scored six points in the period for the Giants, who connected on 48.3 percent of their attempts from the floor in the stanza.

After both teams connected on six three-point attempts in the first half, Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) connected from beyond the arc at the 15:47 mark of the second half to cut Cabrini's lead to 52-46, but back to back three-pointers gave the Cavaliers a 60-48 lead with 13:22 remaining in regulation.  The hosts led by 13 points before Keystone used a 5-0 run to narrow their deficit to 62-54 midway through the period.

Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) connected on a pair of free throws with 8:23 showing on the clock to make it a 67-60 game before Cabrini used a 7-3 run to hold a 74-63 lead at the 6:43 mark.  A pair of Kelly free throws narrowed the gap to within single digits, and Lunsford followed with a three-point play to make the score 74-67 in favor of the hosts with 5:23 to play.  The Cavaliers countered with a 6-0 run to hold an 80-68 with 4:15 remaining.

The teams traded baskets over the next minute and a half, with the hosts holding an 84-72 lead with 2:46 left on the clock.  The Cavaliers stretched their lead to 16 points by making four straight free throws while limiting the Giants to just two points in the final 2:51 of the contest to secure the victory.

Rafferty took home the Championship MVP honors after leading Cabrini with 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Walton-Moss added a double-double on 11 points and 10 boards to help the Cavaliers hold a 42-25 advantage on the glass for the night.  Miller finished with 17 points, Jeremy Knowles tallied 15 points, and A.J. Williams recorded 11 points for the hosts, who shot 53.2 percent from the floor for the game and 36 percent from three-point range while going 15-20 from the free throw line.

Lunsford score a game-high 20 points, all coming in the second half, to lead Keystone, who shot 46.6 from the floor, 36 percent from beyond the arc, and 73.3 percent from the charity stripe.  Kelly finished the game with 19 points to move into third place on Keystone's all-time scoring list, surpassing former teammate Tercel Taylor, who scored 1,305 points from 2007-2011.  Kelly, who also pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds, finishes her career with an impressive, 1,320 points for his career.  Candemeres finished the night with 16 points and a tied for a game-high with seven assists.
