Keystone Opens Season With Sweep of Dickinson

Giants claim opener 11-7 before cruising in nightcap, 9-1

New Market, VA - Keystone College's baseball team opened the 2013 season by sweeping a pair of games from Dickinson College on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader played in New Market, VA.  The Giants, ranked 12th in the country,  pulled out an 11-7 win in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader before cruising to a 9-1 victory in the nightcap in which three pitchers combined for a one-hit pitching gem.

The Giants will take a 2-0 record into Friday's home opener against Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Cairn University.   The Red Devils, who went 25-12 in 2012, will look for their first win of the year on Saturday in a doubleheader against Lancaster Bible College.

In Sunday's opener, Keystone scored four runs in the sixth inning and added three more in the seventh to overcome from a 6-4 deficit.  The Giants scored the first two runs of the game in the home half of the second inning before the Red Devils scored four in the next half inning to take the lead.  After plating seven runs across their two-inning rally, Keystone limited Dickinson to one run in the final four innnings to pull out the win.

Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) led Keystone with four hits in Sunday's opener while Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) went 3-4 at the plate including a home run and three RBI's.  Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) each recorded a pair of hits in the win while Molina and Miguel Castano scored three runs apiece.

Starting pitcher Rob Rogers (Islip, NY/Islip) struck out eight batters while allowing four hits and five runs over the first four innings for Keystone.  Patrick Robinson (Goshen, NY/Goshen) came on in relief and fanned six hitters in four innings of work to earn the win while Justin Martinez (Bronx, NY/Clifton) worked a scoreless ninth inning for the Giants.

In the nightcap, Felix Lopez (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street Campus), Michael Meszoros (Bridgeport, CT/Bassick), and Adam Krebs (Commack, NY/Commack) combined to throw a one-hitter as the Giants cruised to the 9-1 win.  Dickinson would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning by scoring on a passed ball, but the Giants plated a single run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings before a three-run top of the seventh gave the Giants a 6-1 lead.  Keystone would tack on three more runs in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Lopez worked the first three innings and allowed the Red Devils' lone hit while striking out three.  Meszoros tossed four innings of no-hit ball and fanned four batters before Krebs finished the gem off with five strikeouts in the last two innings.

Molina and Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) both added a pair of hits an RBI apiece in the Giants' second win of the day.  Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) scored three runs while Castano added a two hits and two runs scored.

Keystone's single game against Cairn on Friday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field in La Plume.
