Keystone Sweeps Twinbill at Centenary

Giants improve to 13-5 on the season and 4-0 in conference play

Flemington, NJ – Keystone College's baseball team remained unbeaten in Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a pair of victories over Centenary College at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ.  The Giants improve to 13-5 on the season with the win and 4-0 in league play while the Cyclones fall to 6-10-1 on the year and 1-4 in the CSAC after Keystone won by scores of 6-2 and 7-0 on Saturday.

In Saturday's opener, Keystone jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of first inning.  Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) scored the game's first run on a Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) sacrifice fly and Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs) scored on a wild pitch.  Cory Shaver (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) delivered the big knock of the inning with a double that brought home Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) and Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical).

Centenary got a run back in the home half of the first inning and the game remained 4-1 in favor of the Giants until the sixth inning when Shaver belted another RBI double, this time scoring Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)), and Keystone added their sixth run when Montanaro stole second and the Cyclones' pitcher was called for a balk which allowed Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) to walk home from third.

The hosts got another run back the bottom of the sixth inning, but that was all that Keystone pitchers Rob Rogers (Islip, NY/Islip) and Justin Martinez (Bronx, NY/Clifton) would allow on the day, as Rogers went six innings, scattering eight hits while walking two and striking out seven Cyclone batters on the day.  Martinez pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win for the Giants.

Shaver led Keystone with a 3-3, three RBI performance at the plate while Gurman added a pair of hits in the contest.

In Saturday's nightcap, Keystone starter Patrick Robinson (Goshen, NY/Goshen) was in control on the mound, but it took until the fourth inning for the Giants' offense to get going, which it did in a big way, putting up four runs in the frame.  Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) got the scoring started with a solo home run and Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) followed with an RBI base hit that scored Shaver.  Catherina then hit a two run single that plated McLaughlin and Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) to give the Giants the four run lead.

The following inning, Guerrero smashed a two run homer that brought home Gurman, who would also score Keystone's final run of the game on an RBI single by McLaughlin.

Robinson went six strong innings on the mound to earn the win, allowing just three hits and walking two while finishing his outing with six strikeouts.  Adam Krebs (Commack, NY/Commack) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win, allowing one hit while fanning to batters.

Catherina, Guerrero, and McLaughlin each drove in two RBIs apiece in the second game of the day to lead Keystone with Guerrero leading the team with a pair of hits in the win.

Keystone is scheduled to make their home opener on Tuesday afternoon when they host Purchase College in a non-conference game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field in La Plume.
