Pembleton’s Gem Leads Keystone to 4-1 Win in Home Opener

Junior tosses 8.2 innings of no-hit ball in win

La Plume, PA – Mike Pembleton (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) threw 8.2 innings of no-hit baseball on Tuesday afternoon to lead Keystone College to a 4-1 win over Purchase College in the Giants' home opener at Christy Mathewson Field.  Keystone, currently ranked 13th in the country, improves to 14-5 on the season while the Panthers fall to 9-6 on the year.

Despite not getting a hit, Purchase manufactured a run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead.  Michael Sarni drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before Justin Sherman brought him home with a sacrifice fly.

The Giants answered in the home half of the sixth inning as Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) reached on a fielder's choice, and Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) blasted a deep double to left field wall, the first hit of the game for either team, that scored Riscica from first to level the game at 1-1.

Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) kept Pembleton's no-hitter in tack with a tremendous diving catch on a ball hit to the right center gap to lead off the seventh inning.

Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) led off the bottom of the eighth inning with base hit to left and pinch runner Chris Muniz (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Catherina.  Muniz was then aggressive on the base paths to give Keystone a 2-1 lead, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring when the Panthers' catcher's throw skipped past the Panthers' third baseman and into left field.

Molina hit a two out single to left field and was pinch run for by Louis Reyes.  Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) followed with a single to right that allowed Reyes to score an errant throw by Purchase's right fielder.  With Ramirez on third, Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) laced a double down the left field line to give the Giants a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth inning.

Pembleton retired the first two batters of the ninth inning before Sarni lifted a single into centerfield to break up Pembleton's no-no and after the Panthers put runners on first and third following a Keystone error, Adam Krebs (Commack, NY/Commack) came on to record the final out of the game to seal the victory.

Pembleton struck out four batters and walked just two while improving to 3-0 on the season.

Purchase starter Adam Brant when seven strong innings for the Panthers, allowing just two Keystone hits in seven innings of work while taking a no-decision.  Blake Jones, Miller Lulow, and Tino DiPaterio combined to finish out the game for Purchase, who limited Keystone to six hits on the day.

Molina's 2-4 performance led Keystone offensively as the senior catcher was the only player to record more than one hit in the game.

Keystone will next take on Rutgers-Newark on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in La Plume, PA.
