Keystone Completes Regular Season Sweep of Marywood

Garcia goes 4-5 at the plate with six RBIs in doubleheader

Scranton, PA – Keystone College completed a regular season sweep of local Colonial States Athletic Conference rival Marywood University on Monday afternoon.  The Giants used a seven-run fifth inning on their way to a 10-3 win in the opener before getting two-run home runs from Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) in a 4-2 win in the nightcap.  Keystone, who is currently ranked 13th in the country, improves to 23-7 on the season and 12-1 in conference play while the Pacers fall to 8-16 overall and 1-10 in league action.

Playing as the home team at Marywood on Monday, Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one when Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) scored on an RBI groundout by Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), but Marywood tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single by Stephen Gaylets.

The Pacers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run single by Gaylets, but the Giants responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Garcia delivered a two-out, two-strike double down the left field line to plate McLaughlin and Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich).

After Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) stranded a pair of Marywood runners in the visitor's fifth, Keystone broke the game open by putting up seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) got the scoring parade started with an RBI single to bring home Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) before Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) scored on a McLaughlin sacrifice fly.  Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) added an RBI single before Garcia hit a two-run double down the left field line and Montanaro added a two-run double to right center to give the Giants' a 10-3 advantage.

Garcia led Keystone's offense with a 2-3, four RBI performance while Straub and Guerrero added two hits apiece and Catherina led the Giants with two runs scored.

Keystone starting pitcher Michael Meszoros (Bridgeport, CT/Bassick) allowed three runs on seven hits in four innings of work while striking out three batters.  Sosnowski picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and fanning a pair of Marywood batters before Justin Martinez (Bronx, NY/Clifton) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the win and got two outs by the K.

Michael Ciavarella was tagged with the loss for the Pacers after yielding eight runs on 10 hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.  Rene Muriel allowed two runs on two hits to go along with one strikeout in 1.1 innings of work for Marywood, who was paced offensively by Gaylets' 2-3, three RBI performance.

In Monday's nightcap, Marywood took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Chris Ortiz scored the game's first run on a wild pitch, but Keystone took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning McLaughlin lifted a two-run home run over the left field fence.

The Pacers leveled the game at 2-2 by taking advantage of a Giants' throwing error in the visitor's fourth that allowed Zack Klien to score, but Keystone again responded with the long ball in the bottom of the fifth inning as Garcia ripped a two-run shot over the left field fence to put Keystone up 4-2.

Giants' starter Zachary Duffy (Rockville Center, NY/Oceanside) was solid the rest of the way, allowing just two base runners over the next two innings before turning the ball over to Adam Krebs (Commack, NY/Commack), who earned his fourth save of the season after recording the final out of the game with the tying run at the plate.

Duffy improved to 2-0 on the year with the win after scattering four hits and walking three to go along with three strikeouts in six innings of work.   Krebs retired the first two batters he faced in the seventh and yielded just an infield single before recording the final out in the save.

Straub, Gurman, and Garcia had two hits apiece to lead Keystone offense in the game and Garcia also stole a pair of bases in the win.

Marywood starter Billy Kelly allowed two runs on six hits in 3.2 innings of work on the mound before turning the ball over to Nicholas DeFebo who was charged with the loss after allowing just Garcia's home run and a walk in 2.1 innings.

Keystone returns to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when they host the University of Scranton in a non-conference game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field.
